buffaBLOG's Best of 2012: Staff Picks - Steven Gordon

I'm pretty glad that the world ends today. It was fun. 2012 was the best year yet. And I'm especially glad that this is the last list you will ever read on the internet. Bye forever.

BEST ALBUM

Interpol – Turn On The Bright Lights 10th Anniversary Edition

So I'll stop just short of saying that 2012 seemed like a lousy year for new records. There was a veritable treasure trove of “stand-out tracks” to be sure, but no full albums that I sincerely plan on listening to again, beginning-to-end, a year from now, much less feel like writing a whole fucking paragraph about. (Maybe Hot Chip.) Bright Lights, on the other hand, is a record I would gladly listen to again and again and even write a paragraph about a decade later – so I'm glad they reissued it and gave me an excuse to openly've had that shit on repeat. It was from beginning-to-end an excellent record; at once indifferent and sentimental, cool and urgent, sounding like the love-child of Joy Division and Gang of Four. And its 2002 release took the incipient, New Indie Scene implications of contemporaries The Strokes and White Stripes to an eloquent and stylistic Next Level. The band is still trying to deal with the fact that they'll never match or top this album, but they're very aware of its impact. The re-release edition features a ton of b-sides and rarities previously only available in poorly-labeled Limewire format, presumably offered as a metaphorical handjob to fans, as a thank-you for all the literal handjobs their fans (I'm educated guessing) gave them.

Honorable Mention
Hot Chip – In Our Heads

Hot Chip is a pretty good band. Most of their previous work has exhibited repeat-playability, staying-power and name-recognition. With In Our Heads, they really didn't have to try too hard to move a couple records and keep their rent paid a bit longer. But they DID because they are TRUE gentlemen. It wasn't a White Album, but then again it wasn't a White Album year (there's only been a few of those ever). However, Hot Chip did all the things that a band at their level should be doing – ameliorate their sound, increase production slightly, and consistently deliver on songwriting – and they did that stuff well. Anyway, I clearly don't have anything specific to say about this record other than that I'm listening to it repeatedly, and that, incidentally, I could have replaced the words 'Hot Chip' with 'Grizzly Bear.' Next Category!

BEST SONG

The Growlers - “One Million Lovers”

The Growler Dudes have a propensity for putting out some neat tapes. Their recordings have a mellow, albeit profoundly haunted, surf-vibe aesthetic firmly pinned. Like going to the beach at night in sunglasses and a Freddy Krueger sweater. Attempted studio sessions with Dan Auerbach resulted in dissolution and endless postponement of their next release, but this song was a much welcomed peace offering in Q3 2012. And, to be fair, I doubt Auerbach would have thought to throw that much panned, slapback delay on that snare track towards the end. Hashtag: Got your back, Growlers, wherever you might be doing drugs tonight.

Honorable Mention
Ariel Pink - “Baby”

From the idiosyncratic bedroom pop of his early tapes, to the reverb-drown, mood-scores of the Paw Tracks series, to the surprisingly polished hipster anthems of Before Today, the musical evolution of Ariel Pink has taken some strange turns. 2012's Mature Themes was more of the Different Same. Even having at one point committed to a study of his 24+ hour catalog (don't ask), I didn't recognize the artist behind the standout track “Baby” when I first heard it. I could've mistaken it for Captain Beefheart performing “So Glad” with Otis Redding's band, with a healthy dose of Beck's rendition of “Only Have Eyes For You” thrown in for good measure. Or vice vice vice versa.

BEST SHOW

Santigold - Town Ballroom 5/26/12

I was blown away by Santogold's 2008 debut, but struggled to get into a lot of the stuff she released after changing the “o” to an “i”. So I wasn't planning on attending this show until fellow buffaBLOGGER Cliff Parks Jr. offered to get me in for free (“thanks dude!”). Musically, the group seamlessly melded punk, dance, and, I guess, world music into an indelibly catatonic and catchy whole. Imagine if Timbaland gave a bunch of Devo remixes to MIA and the result was released by Mad Decent. But the salient things about the Town Ballroom performance were the Stop Making Sense-esque choreography and the backing band that looked like concierges from an exotic, imperialised vacation resort. You couldn't avert your eyes – let alone ears – even when your sick dance moves required it.

Honorable Mention
Thee Oh Sees/Ty Segall - Town Ballroom 9/25/12

Another show I miraculously got into for free – funny how free shit tastes so much better – thanks for all the help this year, Promoters. Anyway, I couldn't describe Thee Oh Sees better than buffaBLOGGER Mike Torsell, so I'm just going to direct-quote him:

"At one point, a friend ran up to me to tell me this music was 'terrifying.' ...Despite, in a certain sense, their pop sensibilities, there is a definite sinister undertone to this music. The heavy guitars become droning over time, leaving you tensely waiting on a final climax to each song. In some cases this occurs and the result is cathartic and in other cases it just continues until petering out, leaving a sense of tension to carry over to the next song. This remaining tension never really clears out, even when the build up leads to something. This trance like quality to the music made the show quite memorable."

So yeah, so there's that. I had a nice time except that one of my friends got in a fight there, and I got punched real hard by a lady because she thought I was hitting on her girlfriend (it's called “There's a moshpit behind me, Shithead.”), and my double-fist pints turned into a soaked and torn faux-leather jacket, and my glasses got 100% destroyed, and I lost my car keys, and I don't remember a single second of Ty Segall's set. But I woke up in my own bed the next day, great show!!

OK that's it.

buffaBLOG's Best of 2012: Staff Picks - Alicia Greco

With my nostalgia thriving tendencies, this Best of 2012 post was both a blessing and a curse. As I began to think back in time and sort through my memory bank of music ventures and obsessions, I compiled a list. Personally, this has been a year of radical changes, making moves, and a vehement determination during a years amount of unsolicited heartbreak. These songs, albums and performances were impacting during such pivotal moments of this past year.

The Albums of 2012 that I have listened to constantly and have not gotten sick of...

Born To Die - Lana Del Rey
release date: 1.27.2012

I fell in love with Lana Del Rey the moment I heard this album. Each lyrical wrenching song with her sex kitten vocals are a perfect fit into each other, composing a beautiful piece. Her album tells a story of vicious love, loss and dark desperation. A female crooner and a unique beauty, Lana is a force to be reckoned with. The soul striking album is perfect emotional inspiration during times of struggling fate.

Shrines - Purity Ring
release date: 7.24.2012

After hearing Purity Ring's few singles, my anticipation was unbearable as I counted down the days for the release of their debut album. An album so noteworthy that I wrote and circled the date in my calender. I have a special place in my heart for each track on the album. "Amenamy" has a beat that drives me wild and I often find a lyric from "Grandloves" on mental repeat. "I'm in love with truth and sick and tired of this youth." A lyric that also portrays the thematic prowess of Shrines.

An Awesome Wave - alt-J (∆)
release date: 9.18.2012

As of recently I've become fascinated with alt-J, so much that I felt inspired enough to write an artist spotlight. If you haven't heard of them until this point, keep your ears perked because with this full debut album of theirs they are on a quick rise. This is one of those albums that should be listened to beginning to end in one sitting. The individual songs are incredible pieces themselves but there is an experience to be had when listening to it in full.

The very best Buffalo shows of 2012...

Santigold - Town Ballroom
Wednesday May 16, 2012

This was my first time ever seeing Santigold and it was incredible. Town Ballroom was a perfect venue for the dancing crowd and the energy was ecstatic. It was a blur of sparkles, costumes, a white horse costume at one point, and her signature backup dancers whose bad ass attitude complimented Ms. Santigold's style. I have been a fan of Santigold for years so it was phenomenal to finally be seeing "Lights Out" in front of my eyes rather than just through my headphones.

My Bad: a 90s party - Duke's on Allen
TOATS ORIG and QCC
Saturday March 24, 2012

Collectives Toats Orig and Queen City Cartel made a great decision to come together to throw this party. To this day, I still rank this among my favorite parties since I moved to Buffalo and lately when I hear certain 90s tunes I flashback to the night and either start reminiscing with friends or telling them about how much they missed out. I was handed a Pokemon card as I walked in and drank SunnyD Screwdrivers until bar close, with Fresh Prince shot interludes (berry Mondo and vodka). It was a throwback night to relish in 90s music and fashion. Duke's was packed and the music was fantastic, a notable set by Kream whom played every song I wanted to hear only ever interrupted by the occasional dolphin drop. It's not often that you get a chance to belt the words to "Spiderwebs" fueled by decennary indulgence.

Above & Beyond - Town Ballroom
Factory Nightlife
Friday, May 11, 2012

This was the most life-altering performance I attended this year. I thrived only on the energy of the room and the emotionally potent productions from DJs Above & Beyond; it was a show I was looking forward to for weeks. If you care to explore the experience and read about the mind bomb I had that night, you can read my full review here

Best Single of (the moment) this year...

"Lines" - Big Boi feat. A$AP Rocky and Phantogram

Best music video of 2012...

"Bad Girls" - M.I.A.

Cheers to a great year in music. After the holidays and a little bit of "Auld Lang Syne," let's ring in the new year with hopes of progression and talent.

Album Review: Santigold - Master of My Make-Believe

When Santi White first delighted our ears four years ago with her self-titled debut as Santogold, female pop artists with an independent streak were something of a novelty.  Since then however there have certainly been scores of leading ladies who have stirred the blogosphere and racked up the plays on Soundcloud.  White’s second LP, and first as Santigold, arrives when women like Janelle Monae and Grimes are something of household indie names.  Whereas her debut was a massive coming out party, Master of My Make-Believe isn’t going to help her stand out from the crowd.  Her penchant for blurring the lines between genres and embracing her weirder tendencies still remains, but the fiery protest songs of her debut have now been replaced with something a little more vanilla and everyday.

The album opens with ‘GO!’, a song that features Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and it’s a match made in heaven, the two combine to make a high energy, somewhat ramshackle pop song that sets things off nicely.  ‘Freak Like Me’ provides a much-needed burst of energy in the middle of the record, showing off Santigold at her most confident and fearless.  It’s unfortunate that she in unable to maintain that level of excitement throughout however.

Master of My Make-Believe suffers from a lack of inventiveness that never held back Santogold.  Perhaps it’s the fact that this time around White has a reputation to maintain, and a whole hell of a lot more followers, or it’s the simple truth that independent pop and corporate powered mega pop have never been so closely associated as they are now.  Whatever the reason there are a number of songs here that could be classified as safe, something that would’ve seemed an impossibility for Santi White four years ago.  Tracks like ‘Fame’, ‘The Riot’s Gone’ and ‘The Keepers’ are little more than middle of the road populist crowd-pleasing pop.

Santigold will likely disappoint fans of Santogold unfortunately.  The carefree adventurousness of her debut has been lost somewhere.  Even with an impressive production lineup including Q-Tip, Dave Sitek and Nick Zinner, Master of My Make-Believe rarely rises above the mediocre.  Quite a bit has changed since Santi White burst onto the scene four years ago, and her second album proves she hasn’t been too successful in keeping up with the times.

Grade: C

Concert Review: Santigold

Santigold had not one lull during her brilliant show at Town Ballroom on Wednesday May 16th. In addition to her incredible voice, there were outfits of vibrant hues, a horse costume and two back-up dancers clad in sunglasses which conclusively made for a true performance.  Fans were noticeably pleased when song-after-song she blew them away with her stunning prowess and although the back-up dancers bore expressionless faces, their moves complimented Santigold's lyrical dazzle.  It was a show that was far from leaving a taste of disappointment on your tongue and surely are still reveling in the afterglow.  During "Creator" she had girls from the crowd on stage to dance to the fast-paced tribal sounds; one girl fronted a back-up dancer, approaching her with a joking sense of toughness.  The crowd applauded the dancer who, obviously more bad-ass, merely crossed her arms and was in no way losing their impromptu staring contest.  Santigold's invitation for this group interaction brought a dynamic to the show; that she isn't untouchable, that she has passion for her fans. It was phenomenal to see tunes from her newest album, Master of my Make-Believe, live along with the oldies that got me loving her to begin with.  From "Lights Out" to "This Isn't Our Parade," the Ballroom was getting down and singing along.

"I've been haunted all my life
On the brink of something close
People know that I write
Know I'm grappling with a ghost"

Tonight: Santigold

Tonight, indie electronic artist Santigold takes the stage at the Town Ballroom. She is a true original artist who experiments with a unique sound and style. She has collaborated with some of the best including Jay Z, Kanye West, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Beastie Boys, and Diplo. Her second album Master of My Make-Believe, has been getting rave reviews since its May 1st release.

The first time I ever heard Santigold was watching a dance performance to her song "Creator" off her first album in 2008. The song seriously channels some outer space alien sounds and even through its strange style its insanely catchy. Her first single of this latest album "Disparate Youth" might be my favorite of all her work. I haven't had a chance to fully listen to whole album yet but stay tuned on buffaBLOG for a review very soon.

The doors are at 7 PM tonight with supporting act Rye Rye starting off the night around 8 pm.  Tickets are $25.

Monday Odds and Sods 5/14

Folks, I am all over the place today. Hell, I've been all over the place for the last few days. I apologize, but that's just the way it is. A thousand pardons, but today is definitely an Odds and Sods day:
  • There are 3 albums due out this year that I am all about: Yeasayer, Best Coast, and Beach House... and two of them arrive in stores tomorrow. Yeah, I don't know how that worked out, but Best Coast's sophomore effort The Only Place  and Beach House's latest album Bloom hit shops (and the interwebs) on the same bloody day. I don't know what I'm going to do with myself. Do I listen to Beach House first? Best Coast? Do I flip a coin? It's ridiculous. I'm not even sure if I should call it "Beach Coast Tuesday" or "Best House Tuesday." Bloody hell. I shouldn't have to make such decisions. Still no word on new Yeasayer, but it's coming. Stay tuned.
  • I got an email today about Santigold at the Town Ballroom, which means there's a lot of tickets available. What's up with that Buffalo? Or are you planning on showing up and getting your tickets the night of the show? I sure hope so, because we've been doing so good this year, and I'd hate to see this show trip up our good music karma.
  • Buffalo Soccer Sunday has come and gone, and it was good. Mes Que was great, FC Buffalo was fun (in spite of the nil-nil draw), and Manchester City won the English Premier League in mindbogglingly spectacular fashion, making both Gallagher brothers exceedingly happy. And before you go on about "more soccer talk on buffaBLOG," get off it. I mentioned Oasis, didn't I? And here's a list of rock stars who love the beautiful game and the clubs they support. Did you know Paul Oakenfold is a Chelsea man? Now you do.

  • Word on the street has it that Sigur Ros will be streaming their new album Valtari this Thursday at 7 PM EST. Apparently it will be played on the radio (not in Buffalo, because our radio sucks), in record stores (no words as of yet if any of our local shops are involved), and at their website. As always, Pitchfork provides. Please note that Valtari wasn't one of the 3 albums I am all about because I didn't know that Sigur Ros was putting out a new album this year last year when I started obsessing about new Best Coast, Beach House, and Yeasayer.
  • As of this writing I don't know if buffaBLOG won "Best Blog" in Artvoice's Best of Buffalo 2012 awards, and I'm getting that sinking feeling, which is a damn shame because we've been kicking ass lately and fulfilling a vital role in our WNY community. The music scene in Buffalo is moving too fast for the old media to keep up, it's fallen to the new media to carry that weight, and frankly, we got it. No offense to the other blogs who were nominated, but God do we deserve that award.
Thank you, that is all.

Just Announced: Santigold

Santi White, also known as Santigold, is a true original artist that doesn't just include the music she produces but her entire image. I remember hearing one of her first hits "Creator" in 2008 and thinking "what the hell are these sounds and why do I like it so much?" She has a new album releasing this spring titled, Master of My Make-Believe, and one of the tracks "Disparate Youth" was released a few weeks ago. So check it out below and spend some time listening to her first album because you will have the opportunity to see her perform live at the Town Ballroom in May! Supernaut booking and Funtime presents put together this show that will take place Wednesday, May 16th. Tickets go on sale this Friday at noon and they are $25.

Picking up the Slack for MTV: Santigold

Todays "Picking up the Slack for MTV" comes from Santi White. or better known as Santigold.   This American singer, songwriter and producer released her first album Santogold 1998 to very positive reviews.  The track for this video is the second sampling of her upcoming release entitled Master of my Make-Believe set for May 1st.  The song is titled "Disparate Youth" and the video is directed and stars White herself.  The music video sees White embarking on a  journey and conducting some form of interesting ritual with the sounds of her beautiful music and voice accompanying her on the adventure.
