Tonight: Punk & Tots featuring Del Paxton, Why+the+Wires, Deep Pockets, Supergoner, and Hot Tip


The best way to warm up, and this is according to a scientific study I recently saw, is to go to a show and see some good bands. Tonight, you can stay warm by heading to Broadway Joes for music and that other key ingredient to warmth, tater tots. The Punk & Tots series continues with an eclectic selection of bands from all over New York State.

buffaBlog favorite, Del Paxton, will be joined by Why+the+Wires, Deep Pockets, Supergoner, and the new Hot Tip. The bill promises to be a varied one with emo from Del Paxton, indie rock from Deep Pockets, shout and stomp from Why+the+Wires, and classic Superchunk influenced 90’s indie rock from Supergoner. Hot tip, Hot Tip is actually too new for the internet but its members’ past bands (Pang, Cross Stich, Map Maker) pretty much assure the quality of this new act.
As always, the tater tots are free with the cost of admission.

Tonight: Fowls, Bryan Johnson and Family, Brother Keep


Rochester-based, soothing group Fowls will headline tonight at DGBG's, with their math-rock infused edges and extended riffs remnant of acts like Built To Spill and Maps and Atlases. Their latest LP, Into The Wild, released this past October is a pleasant division of soft sounds, of course, as the title suggests, exploring the lone feeling of being immersed in nature.

In addition to Fowls, local acts Bryan Johnson and Family and Brother Keep (replacing Marine Biologist on the bill) will open. Bryan Johnson and Family brings a more gritty sound to their surf-pop edge, with rolling riffs. Brother Keep, based out of Buffalo, NY lends a more haunting, reverberating mesh of rock, slightly melancholic, but on par with the likes of Thursday and Death Cab for Cutie. DJ Loren MarcPro will be spinning in between sets. Music starts at 9 p.m., $5!

Tonight: Jason Isbell


Happy August! It's cool and crisp out there today, so come get steamy tonight at Waiting Room. This evening, the new-ish venue keeps their momentum going with Jason Isbell, an accomplished singer/songwriter well known from his days with Drive-By Truckers. Fans everywhere of old-fashioned Southern Rock, slow-paced, powerful ballads and smooth-shaved men, rejoice! Tonight's going to be memorable.

 His tour's mantra is "Beware ventures which require new clothes, and not a new wearer of clothes." The interpretation of that largely depends on your reading level and imagination, but to me that means that this show is going to be very personal and very honest. He's really putting himself out there. Most of his songs are like that; there are going to be moments tonight where you'll say to yourself "Wow, this sounds like something I've been through" or "Holy shit, he's talking about my entire life." His new album, Southeastern, is a critically acclaimed, metaphorically-speaking wardrobe change; tonight we'll get to see how everything fits.

Tonight: Lazlo Hollyfeld


Here is what you need to do tonight: go see Lazlo Hollyfeld at Night Lights at The Buffalo Botanical Gardens. They are billed as one of Buffalo’s favorite creative bands, but I’ll attempt to be a little more specific: Lazlo Hollyfeld plays the perfect type of spaced-out jam-trance that turns an ordinary, laser-lit walk through the gardens into a magical one; visually and sonically stimulating at the same time. There is this sense you get, as you’re listening to them, that this kind of music was meant to be listened to in a certain context; it’s perfect background music, and The Botanical Gardens on a winter evening is as good a foreground as any. Night Lights goes from 6-10pm, with Lazlo Hollyfeld expected to take the stage at 8.
