Arriving at Mohawk Place, we were greeted by one of the biggest tour buses I've ever seen in my life. This thing was massive and looked oddly out of place in front of Mohawk, a bar more suited for the "roughing it in the van" variety. Nevertheless, this was Dragonette: Juno award winning, hit-single boasting, Canadian electro-pop outfit.

Initially shocked by the sparse turnout (Mohawk Place seemed neery half full), my fears were placated as people started to file in shortly after I arrived. I was a bit late so I only got to check out the last few songs by the Knocks, but what I did hear was an energetic set and an enthusiastic audience. The Knocks have slowly built a reputation for their great live shows and dedicated fans. Most of the people watching the band were dancing or waving their hands, a rare feat when the floor isn't packed with people.

After a brief intermission, Dragonette took to the stage, sans guitarist. The group is now a three piece, with lead singer Martina Sobrara, handling guitar duties for a couple songs. Most of the songs however did not need guitar, or the guitar lines were clearly programmed in.

With neon light focused, squared off backdrops the scene felt straight out of the eighties, which isn't surprising as Dragonette's influence has always been a heavy mix of synthed out 80's pop and modern dance music. Martina and co. blasted through the usual mix of songs, complete with favorites "Let it Go" and the insanely catchy "I Get Around", as well as tracks from the new album such as "Rocket Ship".

Between songs, Martina threw out some witty banter and even some mockingly-pointed jabs at audience members, but it was all in the spirit of good fun and you couldn't help but find the dialogue engaging. The energy was palpable as most of the crowd were either dancing or bobbing their heads with smiles all over their face. Dragonette may be a pop band at its core, but there is an element to this band that makes them stand out from the pack. Perhaps it's that they are a unique live act, displaying all the frenetic energy lacking in serious pop these days. Or maybe it's the fact that Martina is such a great frontwoman. Perhaps they are just really, REALLY good at what they do. Whatever the reason Dragonette is a band that is going places.

Some people are helpless against pop music. The infectious grooves, the melodic hooks, the dance-inspiring beats. It's the kind of music you almost feel guilty for liking. Nevermind that pop music is one of the least respected forms of music amongst serious music fans (the accessibility is a turn-off for many an elitist). When pop is played correctly however, it can be a beautiful thing.

Case in point: Canadian outfit, Dragonette, a band that's been making waves in the last few years for their sugary-brand of electro-pop. To say that the group's singles "Let it Go," "Fixin to Thrill," and "Volcano" are intoxicating is an understatement. These songs pack that sugary-wallop that a pair of dancing feet are reluctant to ignore. In other words, this is the right way to play pop.

The group was scheduled to play Town Ballroom but that show has since been moved to Mohawk Place tonight (7pm, $17). I repeat: THIS SHOW IS NOW AT MOHAWK PLACE. Also on the bill is electro-pop upstarts, the Knocks. You'd be wise to spend your tuesday dancing it up at Mohawk. I know I will.

Continuing with our artist spotlights for the upcoming Camp Bisco Eleven music festival, todays artist is The Knocks. 

After meeting at The New School in New York City, Ben "B-Roc" Ruttner and James "JPatt" Patterson both found themselves in need of a place to live. Deciding that living together just made sense, the two began to make loud music and pissing off the neighbors. "Our apartment is this small, shitty Avenue C apartment with paper thin walls. We both had studio set-ups in our rooms," explains B-Roc. "It would be loud as hell, and the neighbors hated it. They'd knock on the walls and bang on the ceiling. We would go into each other's rooms and say 'I just got the knocks.'"

Since making their neighbors despise them, the duo have been on the up and up and were labeled as one of the "20 hottest producers in music" by NME. The Knocks have remixed a wide of range of acts like Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Ellie Goulding, M83, Chiddy Bang, Foster The People, Passion Pit, Marina and the Diamonds and Britney Spears.  Their debut EP Magic is currently available and are at work on a full album.

It has been a while since the giant influx of "Midnight City" remixes began gushing on to the scene after M83 released the single back in the summer of 2011.   I enjoyed most of the remixes and even posted some of them here, but the one thing that was missing in my opinion was a really great cover of the track. I believe I have finally found one.  This New York City based electronic duo, The Knocks, have taken on this track and have given it new life.  The duo is joined by Mandy Lee for some very extremely captivating vocals.  Crank it up and enjoy your Wednesday.
