Tonight: Pierogi Love Night

Tonight at the Ukranian-American Civic Center, or the Uki Club, a cast of off-beat Buffalo musicians, including UVB-76, Jack Toft, and Bill Nehill, will help celebrate Valentine's Day night by filling lonely hearts with everyone's favorite fried Polish dumpling, and music. Located at 205 Military Road, just past the old Showplace Theater, the Uki Club offers a great selection of Ukrainian beers to down while Jack Toft shoulder bounces to UVB-76.

Music kicks off this evening at 9pm with a cover of $5. Make sure to bring extra cash for food and drinks as no cards are accepted at the Uki Club. In the mean time, check out ANOTHER new Malt Disney directed video from Toft's collaboration with producer Chauncey Tails, this time featuring Little Cake from Radarada.

Listen Up: Chae Hawk f/Bless "Worth It"

It's Valentine's Day, y'all! Take a break from hating on every happy couple you see sitting on the same side of a booth at your local T.G.I.Fridays to check this track out. Local emcee Chae Hawk has the perfect addition to the slow jams mixtape you should be making for that special someone you plan on meeting on Allen St. later.

Clocking in at just under four minutes, "Worth It" has a slinky beat, great advice for the ladies (take your fucking heels off, it's worth it), and should definitely make its way into your headphones.

Tonight: RADARADA w/Matt Script

Mr. Goodbar and the mysterious Mr. Goodbar upstairs have been booking some great up-and-coming acts as of late. Case in point, tonight they play host to chill-hop sixsome, RADARADA, and Buffalo-born, Chicago-rewired, exported back to Buffalo, Matt Script. Both of these bands were noted back in early January as the top five(ish) acts to watch out for in 2014. For first timers, RADARADA is a live instrument hip-hop act, similar to The Roots or early Gym Class Heroes (pre-“New Friend Request”). Script is quite the opposite. When running solo, Matt Script depends on a looper to bring his sound together to make complicated one man band indie-pop gems comparable to that of Matt Pond or Blood Orange. Acts go on around 11pm and there is a $3 cover. Check below to see what you are in store for.

Tonight: Black Dots' Valentimes Day Love Fest

Local punk-centric record store Black Dots will be having its own version of a Valentine's Day celebration,  offering "a romantic evening for all you young lovers, or dump your significant other and come stag!"

Playing this fine evening will be Space Wolves. In case you are looking to dump your significant other at the show, the ever catchy lo-fi Buffalo pop duo might even play their song "Break Up" off the newest cassette tape IV. Newer Buffalo punk band, Sperm, will be having a tour kick off and will be releasing its second cassette tape tonight. Some of Sperm's songs remind me of older Pissed Jeans, with a guitar tone reminiscent of the Dead Kennedys at times. Rounding out the show will be local straight edge noise project Methnic Cleansing, along with Newish Star(r). Newish Star(r) will be playing its first show, so I am not to sure what to expect, but it will feature members from the local bands Big Suze and Dream Journal.

Tonight: All of Them Witches w/Junior Bob, Yakbak

Alone on Valentines Day? Not alone on Valentines Day? Can’t bare the shame of having to cancel those dinner reservations? Can’t stand your potential dining partner? Can you not stand the utter thought of listening to someone yammer on and on about their 27 cats? Well don’t fret another millisecond, my sweet, sweet babies. You can go ahead and cancel that “bloodlined social engagement” right now, no cousin dates for you this year, at least not under my watch. You may be asking yourself, ‘but, Justin what should I do with my evening?  I mean you have already counted out a romantic encounter with my kin folk, as well as deep, meaningful conversations on the topic of felines. What else is there to do?’

Well my dear, dear little recluse Milkie’s is throwing a V-Day bash tonight. You can bring your fling, your boo, your hetero life partner, or even your dear old Granny (however I think they may have a strict no cat policy), along with all of your other imaginary lovers to Milkie’s for their V- Day V-Nice Matinee. Math Rock locals, All of Them Witches will be hosting the show with Toronto’s own Junior Bob, and Ithaca, NY’s Yakbak. So, Come on out, and don’t worry all of those unwatched episodes of Oddities and My Strange Addiction will still be unwatched in the morning. Free music, and drink specials, what could possibly go wrong?

Tonight: Jazzbollah and Sonny Baker

Love is a motherfucker. Today is all about embracing your loved one, or scorning those embracing their loved one. Whatever your situation, Hallmark has the right gift basket for you. Tonight, Jazzbollah will be performing for lovers and scorners alike with an intimate show up front at Nietzsche's. Featuring an always evolving cast of Buffalo's finest musicians, Jazzbollah is an all improv psychedelic freakout as ferocious as it is unpredictable. The term "jamming" has evolved over the years to mean "verse>chorus>verse>chorus>extended solo>chorus", but there was a time when it referred to actual improvisation and Jazzbollah is an embodiment of that spirit. Tonight's lineup includes Eppo, Mark Fantini (Space Junk), Zach Kushner (Peanut Brittle Satellite), DJ Drop D, Jason Staniszewski (Funktional Flow) and Geoff Peters. Also performing will be the ultra prolific Sonny Baker (Lazlo Hollyfeld, Wooden Waves, A Hotel Nourishing), whose solo EP Here Are Those Freaks You've Been Asking For was one of our favorite local releases of 2012. Come share your gift basket at Nietzsche's tonight, show starts at 9.

buffaBLOG Valentine's Day: A Love Story & 3 Mixes.

Just for a moment, let's transcend back to Ancient Greece. Psyche was a sad and lonely girl unaware that she had such an exuberant beauty. She could never quite fall in love with someone, and for some reason men would just admire her from afar and then go on to marry someone else. Aphrodite, the Goddess of love, became intolerably jealous - out of spite she sent her son Cupid (otherwise known as Eros) to make Psyche fall in love with the most repulsive creature he can find on earth. Cupid agrees and obeys, but upon seeing Psyche he falls for her as well. He does not follow through and dares not tell Aphrodite that he did not listen. After receiving a prophecy from an Oracle, Psyche was stranded on a mountain where a monster was to take her as it's wife. Suddenly, she was in a dark castle where she fell in love with her arranged husband, but she was not allowed to look at him and if she did they would no longer be able to be together. She trusts him for a while, but of course she doubts and looks to see that it is not a horrifying monster but beautiful Cupid. Unable to be together anymore, he left Psyche. She longed to prove her love, so she approached Aphrodite, begging her help find her son. The nature of a Goddess is hardly forgiving, so she gives her three nearly impossible tasks just to torture Psyche. With each obstacle Psyche wants to give up and just before committing suicide, somehow something/someone saves her and helps to complete each challenge. Cupid was moved by her determination of love, and together they lived on for eternity.

This, my friends, is the true story of Valentine's Day. Does it bring you hope? I should imagine it would, because this allegory is pretty spot on with how love actually is: searching, trust, hope, downtrodden, dedication, the Prevail. There are the hopeless romantics and the hopeful romantics and for all Love brings sanity, insanity, comfort and struggle. Love is the muse for many of the most beautiful works of music. So this post today is a homage to all of that. A toast to love and all that it brings! Here, here to the DJs who know what's up.

LUVSTEP IV: A New Hope

Each Valentine's Day, Dirty South Joe and Flufftronix put out their collaborative mix entitled Luvstep. It's a mix that emanates poetry. It's a mix that stirs up powerful memories and emotions, and I now almost see it as a check point for my year. Luvstep reminds me of falling in love and the heartbreak that follows. When I hear the rain of the intro of Luvstep II, I flash back to such an intense moment I get chills. DSJ and Flufftronix came to Buffalo and it felt like my ex and I were the only ones they were playing to; afterwards we shook their hands in the Green Room of Soundlab and told them how much we love their mix, if you catch my drift. My jaw dropped when I was reading a DSJ interview in the Philadelphia Weekly  and saw he mentioned us in the last question. Luvstep III brings back memories of when I was alone and bitter, which is why I find Luvstep IV's title A New Hope to be wildly appropriate.

Valensines Mix 2013

Known for his slowed and throwed vibe, he drizzles purple syrup into a heart shaped puddle with this mixtape. Symphonic and sultry as a woman whispers "Sines" through your sound system. It's a slow grind for the hip-hop lovers. It's on the darker side of sexy, but maybe you're into that. The description of his mix reads:

Time is too slow for those who wait, too swift for those who fear, too long for those who grieve, too short for those who rejoice, but for those who love, time is eternity.
-H.V.D

<3 4EVER BB MIX <3

This mix is gorgeous, sexy and I daresay perfect. The flow and track selection is spot on and graceful; it's one of those mixes you'll find yourself scouring the internet trying to find the song you just heard. Not to mention I recognized The-Dream the minute I heard his voice on this mix which makes it that much more complete. The sensual essence of Buzz Trillington's mix may make your heart flutter. It's up only for today, so take a listen and download if you like. Also, check out his recently released tune "Lyfe" - it is effervescent. Do you feel it?

Happy Valentine's Day everyone.

Valentine's Day Playlist

Music can evoke strong emotions in people. Some songs make you cry while others pump you up. Love is no exception and if you listen to any pop radio station you will realize that about 132% of all songs are about love in one form or another, from first meeting to breaking up.There are plenty of songs out there to bring about passion and sensuality for you this Valentine’s Day but it's hard to know what songs to pick without coming off as corny or creepy. Guys, I am here to help with this problem by setting up this playlist for you.

To start off the evening, play this song to set the tone for the evening. It doesn’t start off the night too strong and just suggests that the woman you are spending the day with is a splendid person who creates whimsical joy in you.

Next, perhaps during dinner, you play this to advance the night a bit more and let her know that you have intimate and strong feelings for her as a person.

Things are going great now and starting to get just a bit more physical. You’ve expressed the emotional aspect of your love for her so now you’re ready to let her know how sexy she is. This song is cliché but it is also perfect in every way. There’s a reason everyone uses it: because it never fails.

Now you are done making your moves. You have been wining and dining her all night and ready to get it on as Marvin Gaye suggested. It’s easy to lose focus though, so fellas, play this song to keep yourself in line.

That was a mistake. Your Valentine is thoroughly upset because you played such a stupid and childish song during what was supposed to be a romantic and passionate moment. She calls you names and questions why she ever wanted to be with you. Now you are upset too because you feel insecure. You get defensive and play this song.

Well if she wasn’t done with you before, she is now. Guys, I don't know what happened. You really let this whole situation get out of hand. Ladies, this is your turn at deciding the playlist so you choose this.

And there’s your night! Happy Valentine’s Day everybody!

buffaBLOG's Valentine's Day Playlist

Why shouldn't we have a day to celebrate love? It's awesome. Whether your valentine is your mom, your cat, or your lover, there's a song out there that expresses just what that person, pet, or inanimate object (love doesn't discriminate) means to you.

1.) T. Rex - Mambo Sun: This song is jam-packed with cheesy one-liners that would totally work on a Valentine's Day card with the right Gary Larson drawing. I've been waiting years for someone to tell me they've got stars in their beard and feel real weird for me. Just not bums.

2.) "I Fink U Freeky" - Die Antwoord: They're not exactly known for writing love songs, but the chorus is practically a Valentine's Day anthem - "I fink u freeky and I like you a lot." Write that on a construction paper heart and pass it to your crush, and surely she'll be yours forever. Either that, or she'll fink u illiterate. It's worth a shot, right?

3.) "Wrestlers" - Hot Chip: If your valentine happens to be a fan of pro-wrestling and metaphors, then this song is for you. Love's little struggles are natural, and sometimes it's OK to be both a lover and a fighter, baby.

4.) "By Your Side" - GAYNGS:
I once told my boyfriend I didn't like GAYNGS because they were too sexy. That's why they're perfect for Valentine's Day. The indie-pop supergroup's cover of Sade's beautiful, heartfelt love song will definitely get you in the mood.

5.) "Cutie Boots" - Stepdad: Don't let the name fool you, this song has some deep sentiment. "I wanna kiss you till you know without me telling you that I will never leave you." It's cute and sweet and everything that a love song should be. This one's especially good if your valentine lives far away...LDR's are tough, man.

6.) "Abducted" - Cults: This one's for you, Valentine's naysayers. A pop song about the bitterness of failed love, about knowing you were doomed from the start. The good news is V-Day chocolates will go on sale tomorrow! The better news is that Cults will be in Buffalo on April 23rd! Hooray!

7.) "Tongue Tied" - Grouplove: A song that captures all the hopes, dreams, and awkwardness of falling in love for the first time. Valentine's Day is the perfect time to get a little crushy on somebody (and maybe a little makey-outey, too)!

8.) "Lover's Waltz" - A.A. Bondy: My love of A.A. Bondy is no secret, but I can unbiasedly say that this song is perfect for Valentine's Day. It's part dream and part marriage proposal. I'm officially, publicly calling dibs on this song for first dance at my hypothetical future wedding.

9.) "Family of Love" - Dom: Valentine's Day doesn't just have to be about romance. Remember making valentines for your parents? Just imagine how much they'd appreciate your scribbled affection today!

10.) "What a Wonderful Thing Love is" - Al Green: I leave you with an ode to love. It wouldn't be V-Day without Al Green, would it? Get sexy, kids.
