There is one thing though that really brings the game of hockey together with its fans. That one thing is the music that gets you pumped before a game or gets you out of your seat and dancing in the arena. Song selection at a hockey game is extremely important. The song a team chooses for their power play song or their goal song can make or break the celebration by the fans. The Sabres for instance, in my opinion, have chosen some of the best powerplay/goal combinations in the league. Once a penalty was called against the opposing team, Coheed and Cambrias "Welcome Home" bellowed from the rafters of the arena. When the Sabres would score Blurs "Song 2" had everyone in the arena on their feet. Another Powerplay song used is Dropkick Murphys "Shipping up to Boston," and Arcade Fires "Wake Up" has been used for goal celebrations. The thing these songs have in common, is a very distinct opening build up and loud lyrics to let the fan know something great just happened.
Now, of course there is the fan favorites that are used at almost every hockey game in the league. These songs are nearly guaranteed to be winners and receive little to no complaints from fans. Everyones favorite techno version of "Cotton Eyed Joe", always has fans up dancing like maniacs. Expect to hear Da Rudes "Sandstorm," because seriously, who does not get pumped up by that song? Jimmy Eat Worlds "Sweetness" is a personal favorite get pumped song during hockey games as well.
Finally, Sabres new owner, Terry Pegula, has really embraced the idea of the "Party in the Plaza." The same as last year, there will be a pre-game party outside HSBC Arena before each home game. This year though, T Pegs, has gone and purchased a second big screen so more fans can enjoy the game, free of charge. There will be food, beverages, and merchandise for sale, as well as the musical entertainment of none other than Lance Diamond. Each pre-game party will begin at 5p.m. and continue throughout the duration of the game. So, if you do not have a ticket to the game, fans get your blue and gold on, get down to the plaza, and cheer the Sabres all the way to the Stanley Cup! (knock on wood)
