buffaBLOG Guide to Dyngus Day 2011

Thats right folks, get your pussy willows and squirt guns ready, and get prepared for another raucous Dyngus Day in Buffalo.  It still surprises me how many people are unaware that the world's largest Dyngus Day celebration happens right here in our city.  Buffalo has played the biggest role in turning what would be a relative mild Polish holiday into one of the biggest drinking days of the year.... like we do best.  You don't have to be Polish to enjoy this holiday, trust me... everyone who travels over to the east side will have a blast. Theres pussy willows, squirt guns, a parade, perogies, polka music, and most importantly the traditional Polish Sobieski vodka and Tyskie Beer.

There are festivities all day and you can see the whole schedule at the official Dyngus Day Buffalo website. I am very aware that Polka music isn't exactly the coolest genre to listen to but thats so not true on Dyngus Day, especially when you have bands like Buffalo's very own Those Idiots playing polka versions of "Polka Face", "Fight for your right to Polka", and their original song about Dyngus Day in Buffalo (found below). Those Idiots are performing inside the Central Terminal at 6pm and again in the Pussywillow tent outside from 9:30 - 11:30pm. These guys know how to put on a show and even if you've hated Polka music your whole life I guarantee who won't be able not to dance.  You can also check out 18 time Grammy winner Jimmy Sturr at 1 pm at the Sobieski Vodka Fest Hall in Cheektowaga as well as sooo many other Polka bands throughout the day.

So wear red tomorrow and show your Polish pride, even if you're not Polish. (If you're wardrobe lacks some Polish flare, stop by the Born in Buffalo table inside the Central Terminal to pick up a shirt... buffaBLOG will be working the table so make sure you say hi).  Remember, If you fancy yourself a gentlemen, be sure to smack him with a pussy willow, but beware of the squirt gun!  Dyngus Day is just one more reason why Buffalo is such an awesome city to live in and if you have never been to this celebration make sure you get there today. You will not be disappointed.
