Tonight: Type Relevant & Brownman / Effective Resolution

Are you into a wide variety of music styles? are you free tonight? Well, I've got a show downtown you should consider attending.

Opening the night will be Buffalo's own Effective Resolution, they're a newly formed band that claims to be a genre-blending mix of hip-hop, R&B, rock, and reggae. Surprisingly, that's a pretty fair description of their sound if a song like "Fell So Far" is any indication. That song features a wide variety of live instrumentation and cool sampled effects of what sounds like thunder and a... woodpecker at one point? The keys are triumphant and the groove reminds me of something from the realm of 70s prog music.

Jazz and hip-hop have always been intertwined as rapping over jazz inspired beats is a huge part of hip-hop's origins. Headlining tonight @ Slyboots, Buffalo's own Type Relevant collaborates with Canadian-Born Jazz trumpeter Brownman. Both acts will share the stage and act as the other's backing band. It will be a headlining act of local Hip-Hop flavor with authentic jazz instrumentation and improvisation. Fans of truly live Hip-Hop should look no further. It will be a posse-night with many MCs and musicians sharing the stage to create something truly unique. Guest MCs include: Dr. Ooo, Mad Dukez, and Tommy Too.

Slyboots is located @350 Ellicott street (near the electric Tower). Admission is $10 at the door and the show begins at 10PM.

  1. Dear Kyle Shoemaker,
This "article" is an embarrassment. First of all - check your facts -> Brownman is NOT Canadian-born. He is merely BASED in Toronto. He was born in Trinidad, schooled in Brooklyn, NY and is now heralded as "Canada's preeminent jazz trumpet player" by the Village Voice in NY, since his arrival in Canada in '97. He was the featured soloist with Guru's Jazzmatazz from 2006 to 2010 and by far the biggest name on stage tonight (this information is all freely available using a construct known as Google -- have you heard it this new and exciting device?). For you to gloss over his presence on this performance clearly demonstrates your lack of knowledge. Add to that the irony that an unknown, newly formed opening act has an entire paragraph dedicated to them (friends of your perhaps?). When one sums your lack of basic fact-checking, gross omissions about the feature guests, incorrect emphasis being placed on opening acts rather than Type Relevant itself, and it's featured guests - it seems clear this entire article's credibility is sub-standard at best. Perhaps stick to shoemaking.

  2. The point of previews are to inform those of what is going on around the city. I'm not an expert on any of these musicians and I don't have enough time to actually become one. Upon what little research time I had I found Effective Resolution's music to be interesting to my sensibilities as a music fan and I felt a description was worthy. To insinuate any sort of bias is simply incorrect, I merely described the sets for that night to the best of my ability. My job is to sell something as a good night out despite little familiarity or interest from myself. Getting facts wrong is unfortunate, but it's a blog dude. What do you want from me? I'm not exactly writing for the New York Times here.

I'm not a professional writer and I don't get paid for this. I write for 2 blogs and have a full time job. Go flame someone that isn't doing this because they're passionate about music.

previews on buffaBLOG aren't exactly meant to be all encompassing works that detail the entirety of an artist's career. If you want something like that from us you should really seek out an Artist Spotlight or an Album Review. If you feel we're not doing a good enough job maybe you should email us and ask for a guest writer spot to write about the music that you're passionate about.

I doubt you'll ever see this, but have a nice day.
