While often overshadowed by folks like
Rick James, Ani DiFranco, and the Goo Goo Dolls, Mark Freeland was
one of the all-too-rare treasures of the Buffalo music scene. From
the theatrical prog-rock act Pegasus (which he formed as a teenager
in the 70s), to the visceral punk of The Fems and the synthed-out
strangeness of Electroman, along with countless other acts and
collaborations, the man provided Buffalo with a terrifying amount of
creativity and artistic output (he also was an accomplished painter).
While Freeland never quite achieved the transcendent fame he so
palpably craved, he entertained the F out of local audiences for
almost four decades, before peacefully passing away in 2007. Since
then, friends and fans have gotten together to celebrate the gifted
artist with ElectroRespect, an annual show chock full of loving
tributes. ElectroRespect 5 will be going down at Nietzsche's tonight
(248 Allen St., 9PM, $5), and will feature performances by Cowboys of
Scotland, David Kane, The Disobedient Quartet, Emile Latimer's
Kinfolk, Pillow Queen, Nick Gordon, Jeff Repeater, the Fems Fatale,
and Robby Takac. Come on down and pay respect to a guy who's affected
everyone here in some way or another.
