Tonight: St. Vincent

Last December, art-rocker and best of 2011 lister, St. Vincent, had to cancel her stop in the Nickel City due to “last-minute conflicts.” The backlash was all there with many local fans themselves singing, “I don’t want to be your cheerleader no more.” Even WNY Book Arts Center had cleverly altered the concert poster for the show they had started to say something to the effect of, “Fuck you, St. Vincent.” Obviously, nobody was really that pissed off, but it was just another way that Buffalonians deal with living in a city that sometimes feels forgotten about. Little did we all know, Annie Clark had not forgotten about ol’ Buffalo, and she quickly made arrangements to stop here on her next tour, which we will have the privilege to witness tonight at Town Ballroom at 7 tonight.

St. Vincent has been all over the blogosphere this past year, including buffaBLOG. She released her third album Strange Mercy to much acclaim, made appearances on various TV shows, toured the U.S., Europe, and Australia, released a stunning Record Store Day 7” (which I managed to pick up at Spiral Scratch), and even began writing songs with idol David Byrne saying, “I think I’ve reached the pinnacle of who I want to work with.” The Dallas native has always been known as the doll-faced, lullaby swooner on previous records Marry Me and Actor, but the she lets the makeup smudge a little on Strange Mercy with tracks “Cheerleader” and “Northern Lights,” toting distorted guitar licks, overdriven bass, and angsty lines like, “Gotta get young fast / Gotta get young quick / Gotta make this last / If it makes me sick.” Strange Mercy presents itself as the most focused of Clark’s albums yet, and also gives her a chance to swing an ax like she’s so secretly been known to do live. If you want to see Clark's music at it's best, be at this show tonight. Also, Indie-rockers Shearwater, who were founded by Okervil River members Jonathan Meiburg and Will Sheff, will be opening, so you’ll want to come out on time. The Austin natives will continue to travel with St. Vincent along her North American tour, backing their latest album Animal Joy, with came out in February.

St. Vincent’s first return to Buffalo since 2009 will kick off at 7 at Town Ballroom. Tickets are still available online for $22, and will be the same price at the door.

Here's a taste of St. Vincent playing live songs off Strange Mercy in the video below:
