I know you are all excited for tomorrow's buffaBLOG Beach Party, but don't forget all the great new songs that came out this week. To help you save time, which can now be used to grab your towel and sunscreen, here are my five favorite tracks released between June 8 and June 16. Enjoy!
Superchunk - "This Summer:" Furthering my theory that the world has conspired to remind you that it is, in fact, June, the perennially awesome Superchunk have put out a new single entitled, "This Summer." A mid-tempo rocker, the song is classic Superchunk through and through. The guitar entrance about a minute in is an especially great touch. Check out the single on Spotify for a fun cover of Bananarama's "Cruel Summer." Get it, summer...
Passion Pit - "I'll Be Alright:" Embracing the maximalism of artists like Rustie and Unicorn Kid, Passion Pit's new single is bombastic with a soaring chorus. Since the last release, lead singer Michael Angelakos appears to have toned down the vocal falsetto to excellent effect. This song and their earlier single, "Take a Walk," bodes well for their upcoming album, Gossamer, which will be released on July 24.
Frank Ocean - "Pyramids:" You may recognize Ocean's from the opening song, "No Church in the Wild," on last year's Kanye West/Jay-Z collaboration, Watch the Throne. In his own right, Ocean is an engaging voice, whose work only seems to get stronger. This 10 minute epic is only further proof of his talent
Heavenly Beat - "Tradition:" On July 24, Beach Fossil's John Pena, under the name Heavenly Beat, will be releasing his solo debut LP. "Tradition" is a mellow and airy song featuring guitar samples mixing with wistful vocals. Beach Fossils have been quietly releasing some great stuff for awhile now and this track is hopefully a sign that this side project will be equally engaging. Especially great for fans of The Sea and Cake.
Mission of Burma - "Second Television:" Post-Punk pioneers Mission of Burma have pulled off a considerable second act, returning to active recording back in the early '00s after an almost 15 year hiatus. "Second Television," off their new album, Unsound, is another example of the group's adept mixing of the raw and ferocious with the anthemic. The song builds up to a cathartic and relentless final third reminiscent of their earlier work. The new album will be released on July 9.
