Straight Dope: June 10th

Action Bronson feat. Wiz Khalifa - “The Rockers”

The most profound thing about this song is the threat of a Marty Jannetty dropkick. I don’t know who made Action Bronson angry enough to conjure up such terrible imagery, but I would not want to be in his shoes. He probably heard this song and left the country. I wouldn’t be surprised if Bronson got fined for this. You can’t just go around threatening people with violence so extreme in nature.

As you well know, Mr. Jannetty is formerly one half of the Greatest Tag Team duo in WWF history, The Rockers. He and his partner Shawn Michaels would never officially win the title during their three year run together, but whenever they shared the ring they put on a tag team wrestling clinic. Their relationship would eventually end, of course, and Jannetty would find himself exiled from the WWF for many years after beating up a cop. We'll probably never know if he deployed his signature move, the Rocker Dropper, or nailed the officer with a devastating dropkick, but I can't see any reason why he wouldn't have.

Did I know any of that before I heard this track? No. Am I sorry to know it now? Yes. But only because I realized I’ve been living a shell of a life for not giving Mr. Jannetty and his dropkicking prowess the proper respect. I wish he was on this track himself. But hey, Wiz Khalifa! He's a rapper! Suppose I ought to have mentioned that at some point.

Bronson’s Saab Stories EP is out June 11th.

Run The Jewels - “36” Chain”

I don’t have a 36” chain, so I don’t know what that feels like. I do know that this track is an absolute banger and El-P and Killer Mike are killing it 24/7 at this stage in their careers. I guess I don’t really know if that’s true, I suppose they could spend their downtime drinking lemonade while putting together jigsaw puzzles, but I just realized as I was writing this that drinking lemonade and doing puzzles is awesome. Like I said, killing it.

"36” Chain" is brought to us through the Adult Swim Singles Program, which runs every June in collaboration with their affiliated label Williams Street Records. Snatch it up at adultswim.com and check back every Monday for a new track all summer long.

Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire - Kismet Mixtape

The first track on Kismet opens with a sample from the Sega Genesis classic Altered Beasts and continues with eXquire reflecting on his troubled upbringing, his fear of losing his mother as a child, the decision to talk about guns for amusement without the intention of using them for violence, and the image of his dick floating in a bubble bath. I can do no further convincing.

Wu-Tang Clan - “Family Reunion”

After I listened to "Family Reunion" for the third time, I became acutely aware of a strange creeping discomfort making its way up my spine. I had noticed it before but dismissed it, after all, there was a new Wu-Tang song in my headphones. As this feeling intensified, the lyrics became clearer in my mind, and I had to brace myself from slipping into a terrible frenzy as I heard Masta Killa spit about barbecuing and chasing potato salad with shots of 40 proof Ciroc while kids played happily around them.

I was powerless to untangle my thoughts, so powerful was the rage and confusion clasped about me, dragging me beneath the waves of hysteria. What the hell was he saying? These dudes made 36 Chambers! Someone slap him! Get him away from that mic!

I threw down my headphones and paced over to my window. Throwing back the curtains and pushing open the glass, I shouted profanities into the night. This track had broken me. It was so unapologetically, thoroughly feel-good that it made me question my own capacity for love. I pressed my fingers to my throbbing temples and took a seat on the floor. I could hear the muffled O’Jays sample seeping into the ether from my headphones and openly wept. What had Method Man said? Reunited, the whole world excited? Excited. Homie wore gasoline boots in hell, now that was exciting. This was toxic.

I held my head in my hands until I heard the RZA outro the song and slipped into unconsciousness. When I awoke, the name Russell Jones had been scratched into the floorboards beside me.

Straight Dope: May 20th

Straight Dope. The unvarnished truth. The true information. The full story.

You will find very little of that here.

While somewhat less essential than hard facts about life, what you have instead discovered will surely become a vital part of your musical diet. This is hip hop, son. The best tracks released during the week, as decided by me, hand-picked and brought before you like breakfast in bed with almost zero beds (unless you’re in one) and absolutely no breakfast. Which is fine. You should be hungry for this, because so am I. I don’t mean motivated, either. I mean actually, physically hungry. I have two beers in my refrigerator and I can’t afford groceries. Send help.

Let’s begin.

Kanye West - “Black Skinhead”

Busting out of the gate with a Yeezy video may not be the best way to establish credibility with a skeptical audience, yet here we are. Known primarily for saying outlandish shit to earn the ire of just about everyone, it’s true that his ego has been known to outshine the incredible amount of talent and general artistic ability he possesses. I know I’m not going to change any minds, Kanye West is the man who debuted his last new track via projector on 66 buildings all over the globe. You’re either into it at this point or you’re not.

If you are feeling it, "Black Skinhead" features an angry West getting his punk rock on in a leather jacket with quite a bit more screaming than you might be used to in the genre. It’s pretty stunning, and should hopefully reflect the tone of his new album rumored to drop 6/18. You might as well do yourself a favor and check out "New Slaves" while you’re at it.

If you aren’t feeling it, and would instead like some fuel for your hate furnace, here you go; he drops a LeBron James reference again, will be titling his new album Yeezus, and Ben Affleck intros the clip. Enjoy.

Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire feat. Goldie Glo - “Illest Niggaz Breathin’”

I don’t know if I’m posting this song because I actually like it or because it features a recurring Mortal Kombat sample that makes me want to uppercut everything in sight. Kismet, eXquire’s forthcoming mixtape, is due to be released in June after a delay of several months, and with it comes the promise of more brash, intelligent, poignant tracks.

Still, listening to Goldie open is a bit of a drag, and it’s nowhere near as good as Noble Drew Ali which eX threw at us two weeks ago. Give it a listen regardless, you’re probably at work or something and don’t have anything better to do.

The Lonely Island - “Diaper Money”

Look, it was a slow week, and this happened. The Wack Album is also set for release in June, and I will only feel mild embarrassment when I greedily snatch it up. Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer are the rare joke rappers who actually have an understanding of what they’re playing with and a respect for the music that keeps them from ever seeming like they’re mocking it in more than a playful way. Plus, diaper money, man. It can’t all be high art.

DJ Reflex feat. Childish Gambino - “Body so Tight”

Okay, so you can definitely have sex to this. It’s up to you if you want to throw it down while Troy from Community spits at you, but sign me right up. Donald Glover has earned “must play” rights on any track with his name attached to it after releasing Camp in ‘11 and following it up with his mixtape Royalty last summer. Reflex, who I guess deserves some credit for putting the track together, gets a special mention for throwing together the right mix of sounds to perfectly recall the intro music to an X-Men game I used to play on the Sega Genesis.

See you next week.

Tonight: Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire

Dubbed “the new Biggie Smalls” by fellow rapper Danny Brown, Brooklyn’s Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire brings his rhymes to Soundlab tonight. The MC has explained his name as a merger of intelligence and ignorance made clear through his range of hyper-literate name-dropping of writers like Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Howard Zinn in one verse, to writing a hook around drunk driving on a Wednesday. eX gained national attention in 2011 after releasing Lost in Translation and perhaps the year's best hip-hop remix with The Last Huzzah with guest spots from fellow New Yorkers El-P, Das Racist, and Despot. Bringing New York style back to hip-hop, the rapper represents his culture and gives his audience a glimpse into his life in the kind of unfiltered way that has characterized the storytelling ability of so many of the genre’s legends. Delivering genuine performances that remind us how powerful a statement hip-hop can make, this is a show you don’t want to miss. Special guests Dr. Ooo & C.U.F.X. open the show. Tickets are $12 at the door. Show starts at 10pm.
