Tonight: Badfish


380 days ago, Badfish came to a well-attended Town Ballroom and, mainly because of their firecracker of a trombone player, put on a tremendous performance. As tempted as I might be, and despite the fact that I am writing about a cover band, I am not going to copy and paste my preview from last year and attempt to get away with it. Although I guess it would be pretty funny if I tried to "cover" last year's preview, I am making the decision not to less because of journalistic integrity and more because of my desire to talk more about the trombone player. He was infectious. He led the charge. I've never seen a horn player take over a show like that.

 I guess that's what a great cover band needs. Any group of assholes can cover a Sublime song, but not many can make a living doing it. Badfish isn't successful by accident; they play Sublime almost to the note, but afterwards, you still feel like you just saw a Badfish show. Last year, we were literally looking around people's heads to get a better view of the dude playing the trombone. He was half horn player, half hype man. It was unbelievable. I hope he's back this year.

 Tickets are still available for $19. Tropidelic takes the stage just before Badfish. Doors open at 7pm.

Tonight: Badfish


I’m going to start by borrowing a few lines from our very own Jon Krol, who wrote an interesting piece on cover bands back in January. He wrote that “They lack any kind of artistic pretense. They know what they are and what they are is stupid. But stupid can be fun.” He’s right, of course. But you won’t hear that statement echoed by Badfish, I can promise you that. In the summer of 2011 they played at the harbor, and while it’s virtually impossible to steal the show from Flogging Molly, the crowd was clearly digging them. I’m going to paraphrase here but please, bear with me: At that show they announced that “they were dedicated to preserving the soul and spirit of Brad,” and I can verify that they weren’t just saying that because it sounded good. They brought it that day. And they always bring it.
So they lack artistic pretense but they have plenty of artistic credibility. They are a relentlessly touring band with a national following, bringing the timeless music of Sublime to people on an almost daily basis. We get that they aren’t Sublime, but hey, guess what? Bradley Nowell died over 15 years ago. Let’s compare Badfish to the curator at The Louvre; just because Leonardo da Vinci is gone doesn’t mean nobody has to take care of the Mona Lisa.
Tickets are $19. Doors open at 7. Whiskey Reverb takes the stage at 8, Badfish will follow.

Tonight: Badfish


The most interesting thing about Badfish has got to be their popularity. You see, Badfish are a cover band dedicated to the music of Sublime that was formed at the University of Rhode Island. I'm absolutely positive they didn't think a project like this would amount to anything, they did it for fun. You know what's really fun? In 2006 alone, the band sold nearly 100,000 tickets and grossed 1.4 million (!) in ticket sales. I honestly can't think of another cover band with the ability to play a venue the size of Town Ballroom, it's quite remarkable really. I guess covering the music of 90s bands who fell to a tragic end can be profitable, on that note does anyone want to start a Nirvana tribute band with me? I'm sensing a get rich quick scheme.

Tonight's Show is at Town Ballroom and tickets are $19 at the door.
