Tonight: Thollem/Chase

Tonight, the uninhibitedly charged, free-jazz inspired duo Thollem and Chase will be performing at Hallwalls as part of their spring tour through the East Coast. Most of us know Brian Chase as the drummer for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, however, outside of the trio, he's recognized as an active veteran within Brooklyn's improvisational experimental scene. He will be joined by pianist Thollem Mcdonus, whose long term musical career has seen to dozens of collaborations and more than 30 self-released albums. Both musicians/composers have idiosyncratically straddled between the worlds of punk and free-jazz having come from classically trained backgrounds, the resulting collaboration has been described as an amalgamation of "blues, punk rock, honky tonk, and folk with abstract maximalism and raw technical integrity." (New Atlantis). They begin at 8:00PM, we'll catch you there.

Tonight: The Young Mothers

Tonight Hallwalls launches their 2014 concert series and 40th year in grand experimental fashion with Austin, Texas fusion rockers The Young Mothers. Bringing together hip-hop, free jazz and rock, and "a caterwauling Afro groove" (according to the FB event page), the Young Mothers are the brainchild of Norwegian bass wunderkind Ingebrigt Håker Flaten. They'll be previewing their upcoming debut due in March, A Mother's Work Is Never Done, and unleashing their joyful noise in one of Buffalo's most important cultural institutions, Hallwalls. The show is free with a suggested donation of $10-$15 and starts at 8 PM.

Buffalo Infringement Festival: Day 2

These are indeed the High Holy Days of Buffalo Summer: summer is at its 'summeriest,' Shakespeare in the Park returns for its round 2, and the arts establishment pulls out all the stops with great shows. And of course, Buffalo Infringement runs wild across the city for 11 days and nights, with art happenings in all manners of places emphasizing DIY, standing apart from soul crushing corporate culture, breaking down walls, reclaiming public space, and adventure. Today is Day 2 of the festival and here's a brief sample of all the wildness and excitement happening in the city (the frankly spectacular full schedule can be found here):

Infringement Festival Sundry Friday Night at Babeville: Starting at 6pm, one of Buffalo's most wonderful spaces will host an "esoteric evening" of music and performance featuring Ancient Alchemy performing "Movement Through Sound Is Sound Through Movement" with audience participation, klezmer music from Ahavaraba, Gander, mind melting avant folk by Shubbaluliuma, and Rochester's one man orchestra 23 Psaegz. $5 is the suggested donation because these things don't pay for themselves (unless you want corporate sponsorship... swine). Space will be the place at Nietzsche's, the spiritual and physical home of Buffalo Infringment, when the mind expanding dance party that is Space Junk kicks off a night of electronic explorations into inner and outer space with DJ Soma, Scantron, and Groove Force.

The beloved Essex Street Pub will be featuring shows on both Fridays of Infringement, with tonight featuring Brooklyn troubadour and Buffalo activist Pete Sorkin (6pm - 7:15pm) and New York indie minimalist visionary David Cloyd (7:45pm - 9pm).

Hallwalls will be hosting a Friday Film Festival featuring films about the Queen City starting at 7pm, an excellent way to honor our fine city and its local filmmakers.

Milkies on Elmwood will be putting on "Milkie's Musical Mind Melt Masterpiece" from 9pm - 4am featuring Jezkova, N3WT, ghettotronics, PINJA, and Short Circuit. The electronic funk and bass will be heavy, and you will dance.

Today: Boyd Lee Dunlop

This afternoon, the 86 year old Boyd Lee Dunlop will be holding a matinee CD release show at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center for his second album, The Lake Reflections.

This pianist has an interesting story behind him, including a more than near death experience. Just last year, he was in a nursing home when his first album was released which brought him into the national spot light. Shortly after the release and celebration of that CD however, Dunlop suffered a heart attack in which he was actually dead for several minutes before being revived.

That's part of what makes The Lake Reflections such a unique album. The other aspect that makes this collection of solo piano songs so incredible is the recording process behind them. Dunlop looked at a series photos of Lake Erie and played what the pictures made him feel.

The show starts at 2. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $12 for students/seniors and $10 dollars for members.

Buffalo Infringement Festival: Day 7

Lucky day number seven of Infringement and lucky for you to get my picks of what to do today/tonight for events and showcases! With my background in the Buffalo theatre community I'd like to share with you a few other (not entirely musical) performances going on tonight:

Homegrown Film Night

Lovers of film, and local film, will want to check out the Homegrown Film showcase at Hallwalls tonight. Seven Infringement projects can be seen beginning from 6:45 pm to 8:30 pm including two that I am very interested in. The first is called Riding on the Edge: Bicycling in Buffalo which is a short documentary that is aimed at capturing the culture of cycling in Buffalo. Also of note is the project from my friend Vj Deliria which presents abstract interpretations of everyday life objects, light, and landscapes. Viewing at EL MUSEO, 91 allen st. Buffalo, NY.

Symphony-theatreFiguren

At Hardware Cafe, you can check out a unique Infringement offering that entails a mixed medium performance of puppetry, scrolling art, and poetry by theatreFiguren. All of which combine to tell the story of a forgotten man and his dog. The action is scored by Aaron Copland's "Symphony #3" which is the best known American symphony of the 20th century. The fourth movement is the most well known as it is a varriation of Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man. Puppetry is I feel, an underated expression of character. And it isn't often that Buffalo is exposed to puppetry in perfomrance or the creators of the puppets themselves! Performance begins at 7 pm and lasts appoximately an hour. He Who Gets Slapped-Torn Space Theater

Best described as a unique piece of absurdist theater that evokes timeless and current issues of society and humanity. "He Who Gets Slapped" by Leonid Andreyev is told from the view of an intellectual who has delved into the life of a clown and struggling to exist in a world of social issues. Torn Space is one of Buffalo's best theaters because they are always pushing the boundaries with the experimental work that they do. They are also known for their use of found and unconventional spaces for performance. This particular space, The Foundry building, formerly Buffalo ReUse is exactly that. "He Who Gets Slapped" is directed by Megan Callahan. Admission is $10.00 and more information about tickets can be found HERE. All performances are at 8 pm. THE FOUNDRY, 298 northampton st. Sturdy North Launch Party

Additionally for the lovers of electronic music there will be another opportunity to see some of your favorite Infringing performers. Sturdy North is a new creative collective of electronic music producers and DJs including Eppo, JeffRepeater-Shapes of States, Ay Fast, Kaaaatastrophic! DJ Mace and others. The showcase at Hallwalls is being dubbed as the collective's launch party. So if you haven't got enough of your Electronic music fix already for Infringement you'll have another opportunity tonight. Performances by Hallwalls Theatre Sturdy North, Eppo, Ay Fast, and Shapes of States beginning at 7:30 pm. HALLWALLS 341 delaware ave. Buffalo, NY
