Tonight: Queen CIty Music Lottery Showcase


One of the cooler ideas that has graced Buffalo's music scene this year is Sugar City's Queen City Music Lottery. The concept was simple: willing participants (both musicians and non) threw their names into a hat, and randomly, bands were assembled, regardless of experience and instruments of choice. Upon forming, bands were asked to come up with a name and roughly 15-20 mins of music. Over the last couple months, a handful of acts have been teasing us with song samplings, which have included cuts of surf rock, dance punk, and garage.

 After 10 weeks of practicing, the final products will make their debuts this evening at the Foundry (298 North Hampton Street). Doors for tonight's showcase open at 6pm, while music starts at 7pm. Cover is $5. Check out the event page here for the full schedule.

Queen City Music Lottery Band, Nail School, Debuts First Song


On the eve of the Queen City Music Lottery Showcase, one of the randomly assembled acts, Nail School, has released its first track via bandcamp. Featuring members of JOHNS and Space Wolves, Nail School's "Russian Bride" is a cut of dark, aggressive garage-punk that doesn't sound too unlike some of singer John Toohill's other projects, including the recently debuted Alpha Hopper. You can catch Nail School, along with Plosive, Move Real Fast Stop., and a handful of other brand new acts, tomorrow night at the Foundry (298 Northhampton St) starting at 6pm.

Rackmastas Release Return of the Rack LP


Rackmastas, a long time duo born out of the basement of Gates Circle Wine & Liquor, recently released their long awaited LP, Return of the Rack. Spanning 17 tracks, the record has a lot going on, although don't be misled by the long tracklist as a handful of those songs are fun little radio station under writings. The long form tunes cover many genres, including R&B, hip hop, dream pop, experimental post-rock, jazz, and pretty much you name it.

Stand out tracks include "Girl Watcher," a pretty cut dreamy computer pop that would please Dntel fans, and "H.H.G.M.T Zoppity," which sounds like what Collections of Colonies of Bees might sound like on a sugar high. You can stream the entire Return of the Rack, which features contributions from members of Inquiring Mind, Crows and Jays, and more, at the band's bandcamp page. Just Announced: Bombay Bicycle Club


Yesterday, proving its never too early to start thinking about summer, Town Ballroom announced that London band Bombay Bicycle Club will be making a stop at the Main St. venue on Saturday, August 2nd. If you are unfamiliar with the act, think of them as a UK version of Vampire Weekend and go from there. Tickets go on sale this Friday, April 4th, at noon for $20 in advance, $22 day of.

Wild Wild Fest Announces Lineup



This evening, the Wild Wild Fest announced the initial lineup for year three of the two-day fest. Hosted at the Willow Creek Winery in Silver Creek, NY on August 29th and 30th, the fest will be hosting Well Worn Boot (festival founders), Lazlo Hollyfeld, Jack Toft, Mr. Boneless, Aircraft, Armcannon, Lesionread, Folk Faces, and many more acts from the WNY area and beyond.

Tickets will be available for $30 in advance/$40 at the door for a full weekend pass, or $20 in advance/$30 at the door for single day passes. You can purchase tickets at the Wild Wild Fest website, or at a few local shops, including Ultra Hoops in Buffalo and Willow Creek itself. Volunteer opportunities for the festival, which include free entry, camping, and food, are also available. If interested, please inquire here.

In other Well Worn Boot news, the band just released the first single from its upcoming new EP. Titled "Certified Party Girl," the track will be featured on Boot's Boot in Space EP, set for release on Saturday, April 19th at Nietzsche's. You may listen to "Certified Party Girl" below.

Passion In Constellation Drops New Single


Passion in Constellation, the project of Buffalo producer Chris Alan, released its follow up single to "Sunlight" this past weekend. On "Weird Tonight," Alan appears to be aiming to drop a summer anthem on Buffalo as playful synths lead up to a big chorus that recalls Empire of the Sun's "Alive." Fans of Passion Pit, MGMT (at their less difficult), and yes, Empire of the Sun, should give the track a listen. Keep an eye out for future tunes from this interesting project. Tonight: buffaBLOG 4th Birthday Party


Our birthday has arrived. Well, technically its tomorrow, but we are close enough. This evening at Duke's, we will celebrate four years of the blog with a great cast of bands from over the WNY area. If you missed any of the spotlights on the acts playing tonight, make a moment to brush up below.

Just Announced: Swans


After playing one of the most blistering shows that the Tralf has held in some time, the long time post-punk outfit Swans is set to return to the downtown Buffalo venue on Saturday, July 5th. Led my Michael Gira, the band is set to release the follow up to 2012's critically claimed album The Seer on May 13th, a double album titled To Be Kind. You can listen to To Be Kind's first leaked song, "A Little God in My Hands," below. Tickets will go on sale this Friday, March 28th, at noon for $15 in advance/$18 day of.

Gumwads Release Debut Surf-Punk Single


Over the last couple years, a few surf-rock bands have been sprouting up in Buffalo, most notably Space Wolves and Aaron & the Burrs. Yesterday, Gumwads, a new local surf-punk trio, released their raucous, debut single "Gimmie Every Inch." This is a fun and messy song. Captain Geech & the Shrimp Shack Shooters it is not. The single, along with the change of pace B-side "I'm Sick of Musicians," was recorded by Mr. Ski-Mask and can be downloaded over at Gumwads' bandcamp page. Don't be surprised to hear this blaring through the Pink's speakers at last call one of these nights. In the mean time, listen to "Gimmie Every Inch" below.

Admirable Traits Signs Brooklyn's Half Day, Releases In Public LP

Admirable Traits Records, an upstart record label with roots in Buffalo and Brooklyn (and Iowa) has today announced its latest signing, Brooklyn's Half Day. The rollicking In Public is a collection of ten call-to-arms cuts of indie punk with shout along, pissed off vocals that recall Titus Andronicus, Cloud Nothings, Swearin', and even Cap'n Jazz. Just Announced: Mount Eerie


Phil Elverum will bring his Mount Eerie project, formally known as Microphones, back to Buffalo this spring on Thursday, April 17th with a performance at Babeville's Ninth Ward. Mount Eerie most recently played the Buffalo venue back in September of 2012. The prolific musician was quite busy in 2013, releasing a string of albums, including November's Pre-Human Ideas. Tickets for the show will go on sale this Friday, March 28th, for $13 in advance/$15 day of.

Nick Gordon Pens Tune For The Life and Times of Grovey Cleves



Local troubadour Nick Gordon has released an original song for the literary project, The Life and Times of Grovey Cleves, a dark and humorous look at the former Buffalo Mayor and two-time President of the United States. Titled "Grovey's Tune," the twangy folk song (think a little Arlo Guthrie, a little Red House Painters) is a somber look at Cleveland's path to the White House. Gordon wrote the song (see lyrics below), and released along with fellow local musician Eric Kendall. Kendall also contributes drums and guitar.

 Written by buffaBLOG and Block Club contributor Scott Mancuso and illustrated by local artist Mickey Harmon, The Life and Times of Grovey Cleves celebrated its opening reception this past Friday at the Western New York Book and Arts Center. If you were not in attendance, the exhibit will continue its run at WNYBAC through late April. In addition, copies of the book will be available to purchase at the Buffalo Small Press Book Fair next month. In the mean time, listen to "Grovey's Tune" below.

Tonight: Porches


The Glitter Box is hosting a great little bill this evening, a perfect way to end your music week. The shallow West Side establishment will be hosting Porches, a five piece currently on tour from Brooklyn. Their dark and somber blend of indie rock, dubbed bummer pop (I like that term), is very Pedro the Lion-esque. Local support for tonight is a bit across the board: Bobby Griffith's droney and ambient VWLS project, laid back folkie Nick Gordon, and the debut live performance from the indie pop act, Inquiring Mind.

 Music kicks off at 6pm. No cover is noted on the event page, but bring at few bucks to take care of the touring band.

Nelson-Type Returns With "Daydreams"


It's been nearly two years since we last heard from Buffalo's Nelson-Type. The soaring dream-rock duo put music on the back burner for a while, but today, finally released some new material in the form of the song "Daydreams." The band's duel harmonies are back along with some rather Battles sounding percussion and rhythms. Those basslines sound very nice. Anyways, the track is off the band's forthcoming Cycles EP, set for release on April 15th. Check out "Daydreams" below.

Sleepy Hahas Debut Lesionread Directed Music Video


Just yesterday, Buffalo garage rock foursome, Sleepy Hahas, debuted the music video for their heavy new single "I Hate My Body (and It Hates Me Too)," taken from the band's forthcoming LP, Dull Days. The trippy clip, directed by Shawn Lewis aka Lesionread, would be a perfect way to spend a few mins during an upcoming LSD trip. The band will be celebrating the release of Dull Days on Friday, May 16th at Buffalo Iron Works. Full show details can be found here. Sugar City Finds A New Home


Nearly two years after they closed up shop at the former Wadsworth location, Buffalo DIY collective Sugar City has found a new home. Located on the West Side at 1239 Niagara Street, the venue (pictured above) will continue to offer all ages, alcohol free events in various shapes and sizes under the art realm. Luckily, the group has not been dormant during their long search for a new space as their Ride the Metro, Queen City Music Lottery, and mainstay event, Soul Night, have gone on/continued despite not having a central hub. The art space, which should hold around 170 people, is currently under renovation and is projected to (hopefully) open sometime in the early summer. 

 Sugar City will be hosting an informal meeting at Niagara St. location on Thursday, March 27th at 6:30pm in hopes to recruit new volunteers, discuss community involvement, show off the new space, and maybe gain a few bucks to help the process. You can get full meeting details here.

Fleshy Mounds Members Release Noisy Fun-a-Day Project


Sugar's City's February Fun-a-Day series once again stirred up some interesting, and yes, fun music projects. Between Bryan Johnson tackling Top 40 radio and Alex Berkley's ambitious Fun-a-Day Part 2 record, there was no shortage of quality music to come out of what was otherwise a pretty rough month here in Buffalo. Another music endeavor from the creative month was 28 Movements by Doran Kerfien. The duo, consisting of Kathy Doran and Steve Kerfien of Buffalo's Fleshy Mounds, recorded short yet complex fractures of sound bites daily (a similar process to Berkley), and turned them into 10 musical pieces. What results is a freewheeling and anxious collection of glitchy noise rock and IDM that recalls Liars, Secret Mommy, Matmos, and Mouse on Mars. 

The entire 28 Movements can be streamed on the duo's bandcamp page, and keep an eye out for future material from the duo as this does not appear to be a one time collaboration. In the mean time, listen to "Home of the Rabbit" below.

Buffalo's Difficult Night Drops Debut EP


Difficult Night, a four piece act band featuring Buffalo singer/songwriter Damian Weber, released its debut EP a couple days ago. The songs have a loose, slacker vibe to them reminiscent of solo Steven Malkmus, Jeremy Jay, and local troubadour Nick Gordon. The band has been making the bar rounds as of late, so keep an eye out for an upcoming performance.

Quiet Country Audio Debuts New Session feat. Cedar Kites



Quiet Country Audio keeps rolling in 2014 as the recording studio just released its latest live session of the year. This time around, QCA teamed up with newish emo/punk quartet, Cedar Kites. The local four piece has been making its rounds about Buffalo over the past year, and is expected to release an EP, titled Framework, sometime this year. You can listen/watch to the entire Cedar Kites session at QCA's website here. Rochester's Genesee Live Releases New Session feat. Ben Morey


This past Saturday, the Rochester based live session series, Genesee Live, released the 12th installment in its ongoing project, this time featuring singer/songwriter Ben Morey. You may remember Morey as we featured the Rochester musician's new album, Pleasant, as our Album of the Week in early 2014. Following last month's Pleistocene showcase, Genny Live appears to be moving away from the live venue tapings into a more intimate and subdued set of recordings, resulting in one of GL's best clips to date in Morey's kitchen session.
