This past weekend Lazlo Hollyfeld released their newest and most polished record yet, the buffaBLOG fav 'Desert'. We caught up with the group to discuss the new album, fake movies, and Napoleon Dynamite
buffaBLOG: how is new album different from your previous?
Lazlo: We took a different approach entirely for this one. It’s our first concept album in a way. We sat down and documented a period of time on the road from a few years back where we went through some pretty insane van breaking down / living in parking lots / driving like maniacs to get home kinda stuff. Then we tried to write music based on the experiences. As a result the music has a real meaning to us that we can relate to life. We also wanted to take the very meticulous studio approach that we took on the “Pacer” EP we released a few years ago. Very time consuming but the results are worth it. Over a year in the studio.
buffaBLOG: will you be touring following the release?
buffaBLOG: will you be touring following the release?
Lazlo: We haven’t figured that out yet. Our goal is to try and put together a full audio and visual experience for the album to be performed front to back. It’s gonna take additional musicians and some serious planning from the light and visual end but we hope to be able to take the whole package on the road.
buffaBLOG: you guys have been together for quite some time now. whats the key to longevity in a band?
buffaBLOG: you guys have been together for quite some time now. whats the key to longevity in a band?
Lazlo: Constantly exploring new ideas. You have to reinvent yourself all of the time. Going for the concept album created a whole new outlet of creativity for us. One that we haven’t explored in ten years of writing music together. We’re already brainstorming the next one. I think we plan on writing a fake movie screenplay and then creating the soundtrack for it.
buffaBLOG: whats the story behind your band name?
buffaBLOG: whats the story behind your band name?
Lazlo: It comes from a character for the 80’s movie Real Genius. Lazlo Hollyfeld was a super genius that lived in the steam tunnels of a college dormitory. The guy who played Lazlo went on to play Uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite.
