Album of the Week
—
The blog hype is real. Swedish synth band, ceo's 'white magic' is magical from start to finish. Like a more sophisticated cut copy or metric, this record feels like an electro pop album for the intellectual. From the beginning plane engine roar that crescendos into a beautiful orchestral string arrangement, you realize these songs are going to dive deeper with more than just the usual dance hook. With so many instruments and layered sounds, 'White Magic' is filled to the brim with replay value. Each listen offers something new that went unnoticed the first time through. Some songs take you to the tropics and are, at times, reminiscent of the 80's band Toto. Other times is has the string accompanied theater sound of David Byrne's 2004 album 'Grown Backwards'. Although its only 30 minutes long, ceo has truly crafted a short but sweet, global dance-pop record that is as close to perfect as one could hope to get.
