Cinco de Mayo is tonight. The date is a day of pride for the Mexican region as celebrations to commemorate the victory of the Mexican army for the occupied French in 1862 take place. Despite the historical significance of the date, most people tend to celebrate by throwing back a couple tequila shots and enjoying some mariachi music. The Alright Knox Art Gallery will be hosting their own Cinco de Mayo party tonight, the Fiesta 4 The Arts! A variety of music and dance acts will be on hand to entertain the masses, included the likes of DJ Cutler and the Alrights. Local dance groups Lehrer Dance, Confrigeration, and Habit Dance are just a few of the performers set to appear. Tonight's event also sees the end of the two month long Give 4 Greatness campaign, which began on Mardi Gras, in hopes of raising money for under funded local art institutions.
Following the event at the Knox, a handful of bars around town will be hosting their own after parties with musicals guests. McGarrett's will be providing the extended jams and funk with guest Rhubarb and Family Funktion & the Sitar Jams. Just north down the block, Coles' third floor will first feature bluegrass group Erie Lackawanna Railroad then later in the night switch gears at DJ Cutler and Pretty Pleas finish out the night. The Sportsmens Tavern will have indie soul act Gretchen Schultz & the Morvells. All three bars will feature a $3 cover. Also, Merge will have a cover free open mic are all aspiring musicians. The Fiesta 4 The Arts! will run from 6:30pm - 10:00pm at the Albright Knox Art Gallery and a minimum $5 donation is asked at the door.
