Joy Division is not exactly the most upbeat band out there. Their post punk tunes were frequently, if not always, dark, but occasionally the songs had a danceable beat behind them, if you could get past all of the doom and gloom that is. Their song "Transmission" kicks in with a menacing bass line, distant post punk guitars, and Ian Curtis' always memorable baritone. A couple years ago, British indie dance group Hot Chip took the song and turned it into a perfect addition to a summer beach mixtape. Alexis Taylor's soft, almost youthful vocals are a stark contrast from Curtis. Reverby steel drums and noodly guitar lines weave in and out of the song as Taylor's vocals become layered and more electronic. Enjoy.
