Those of you who happened to miss the first day of Buffalo's Infringement Festival, I have to say I feel a little sorry for you. First off, the Opening Ceremonies at Infringement's Ground Zero venue, Nietzsche's, featured everything last night from slam poetry to punk to loopy ambiance to ragtime. There was even a good old flash job(We Are!) outside. The reason you should really be kicking yourself though is that yesterday was the easiest day of all. Today, things start to get overwhelming and choices will have to be made as to which act you want to devote your time to. To help you out, here is a list of our top choices.
1. Backdoor Speakeasy
One of the best things about Infringement is that if you happen to miss an act early in the festival, like say the readings from the Backdoor Speakeasy manager Sean McGill, well you are in luck, as he will be giving another reading this evening at SP@CE 244 from 7:00-7:30pm. Infringement is like that.
2. The Bend Music Showcase
one of the standout events for this evening and I know I will find myself over there at some point. Freak-folk trio Pretty Sisters open the night at 10:00pm, followed next at 11:00pm by the post punk evoking indietronic act Early Attic. The band only had a few shows under their belt, but you can already see some touches of Explosions in the Sky, Interpol, and The Antlers in their sound. That's a good thing by the way. The Tins, who are playing their only Infringement gig tonight, take the stage at midnight. Did I mention they are trying to record an album? Rounding the evening out at The Bend is Akron, Ohio's prog rock jam session Alvir Hall at 1:00am.
3. Sci Fi Costume Party @ Nietzches
If you are in the mood for something on the side of weirdness, head next door for the awesomely subtle titled Journey To Uranus: Sci Fi Costume Party at Nietzsche's running from 10:30-3:00am. One of the many costume parties taking part during the festival, make sure you come dressed in your best space gear attire. Not only will you save $2 ($5 cover for those in costume, $7 for no costume), but you don't want to be that guy who doesn't dress up, do you? . Opening the party will be the punk/funk pervs of Anal Pudding. With song titles like "Your Dog Got Crazy Nipples", "Your Momma's Got a Strap On" and the shockingly non ballad "Goat Raper", don't tell me you are not the least bit intrigued. After the electronic set from Project Y, Universe Shark will transform into one the Buffalo's best improv acts FUTURE DRAGON at midnight. Indie Hip Hop artist Walt Diziness will entertain with his smart lyrics leading up to Sci Fi Party closers Kinetic Stereokids at 1:30am. Out of Flint, Michigan, the modern indie fluenced act has been getting some serious pub whiling touring all over the country the past couple years.
5. Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone
If you feel like taking a film in this evening at some point, tonight is the first screening of Lev Anderson and Chris Metzler's Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone documentary of pioneering punk/ska/funk band Fishbone. Halwell's will be hosting the screening from 8:00-10:00pm.
6. Buskers
Lastly, if you just happen to find yourself wandering the streets after work, keep an eye out for all of the various buskers outside of Luckdogs, Antique Man, and Old Wondermoth from 5:00-7:00pm entertaining the masses of foot traffic.
Of course, there is so much more going on than what I wrote and you can find the entire schedule for today and every day at Infringement's website. If you can navigate through all of the options for this crazy festival, then you are a better man than I am. Also, keep reading buffaBLOG every day throughout the festival for our daily previews. Enjoy Infringement.
