Tonight: Jessica Lee Mayfield

How many 21 year old musicians do you know that get as much respect as Jessica Lea Mayfield? Chances are not very many. But then again, not that many start touring at the age of 8 either. Jessica got her start as part of a bluegrass-style family band when she was only a child, roaming the country in a beat up '56 tour bus and hasn't looked back since. She recorded her first EP at 15 and some six years later is being talked about as "buzz artist of 2011". While you could consider Jessica a country style singer-songwriter (comparisons to Loretta Lynn abound), her lyrics and songs contain a somewhat darker, more moody element. You get the impression that she may be a very, very sad girl. Check out her LP's and you'll see what I mean. Recently, Jessica contributed a track to Spin's Nirvana tribute, Newermind, and her version of "Lounge Act" was by far the most moving. Tonight she'll be playing Mohawk place with another standout artist, Jonny Corndawg.

On his facebook page, Jonny Corndawg states he is a country singer and NOT a singer-songwriter. "His music is more in the vein of that obscure '70s gay country that housewives would discover on a Bear Family reissue in twenty years." When you listen to the 'Dawg, you'll see what he means. It has an old, rustic sound, interjected with elements of humor. With song titles such as "When a Ford Man Turns Chevy" and "Undercover Dad" you know he ain't taking himself too seriously. Should be a great time and what else are you doing tonight anyway? Doors are at 8pm. Music follows soon after. Tickets $10adv and more at the door.
