There are a ton of quality local bands that I gladly check out whenever they perform, but Bearhunter is one of those superlative acts that I go out of my way to recommend to friends. I've burned and handed out countless copies of the most recent album, Still Life Terrarium, and I hope I don't hear from their lawyer for admitting that, since they WERE handing it out for free on Record Store Day. It's a great sound: indie with adequate muscle and ample fangs; the clang of Pavement meets the fireside warmth of Eels, with added blasts of brazen power blues a la Queens Of The Stone Age.
They are going to be holding it down at Nietzsche's tonight, and it'll be worthwhile to check out even if only to watch every guitar-player in attendance shwinging over frontman Dave Calos' impressive pedalboard (easily the most extensive and shwing-worthy in Buffalo). Sharing the stage are Cosmic Shakedown, who plan to take you down a rabbit hole of heavy, vintage riffage, and White Bison, who will be reciting some rumbling prog straight out of the Book of Revelations. Get there at 10 for a night of THE best underground rock this city has to offer.
