Tonight Mohawk Place plays host to experimental noise pop ensemble Xiu Xiu. The brainchild of frontman Jamie Stewart, the band takes its name from a Chinese film (of the same name) about a wealthy girl that travels to the country as part of China's Down to the Countryside Movement and became part of China's "lost generation". During the band's 9 near tenure as a touring and recording act (and several lineup changes) the have blended indie style acoustics, noise rock, and electro-pop along with Stewart's morose and relatively depressing lyics. Drawing heavily on the songwriting styles of acts like the Smiths and Joy Division (both of which the band has covered on numerous occasions), the balance of noise and pop the band strikes allows Stewart to express his vulnerabilities alongside the frustration, angst, and aggression that go with them. Opening for them will be Hedgehog, a Chinese post-alternative act that blends the styles of bands like the Smiths with a taste of dub music, and New Orleans based electro-pop ensemble Kindest Lines. Tickets will cost you $12, and the show gets started around 8pm.
