Tapes 'n Tapes are often cited as one of the first “blog bands.” They went from virtual obscurity, self-releasing records out of Minneapolis in the mid-00s, to becoming one of the biggest names in indie music almost overnight on the hype generated by blogs like Gorilla vs. Bear and Music For Robots. The quartet quickly became one of the biggest names in indie music, securing a deal with XL Recordings and playing SXSW, Coachella, and Letterman shortly after releasing 2006's The Loon. And to compound their internet stardom, their Take Away Show and performances on Daytrotter are some of the most memorable in either site's history.
The band's sound is pastiche, an homage to everything good in indie history. With aggressive strumming, a pop sensibility that isn't afraid to appropriate elements folk, country, jazz, and occasionally world music, and some seriously sharp, sharp lyrics, Tapes 'n Tapes have earned comparisons to Pavement, The Pixies, Arcade Fire, and Modest Mouse. There's something for everyone, basically, but you know what? You don't need another blog to tell you about it. Go to the Ninth Ward tonight (341 Delaware Ave, 8pm, $15 pre/ $17 door) to see them do it in real time.
