Coldplay seem to be well on their way to becoming the next U2, if they are not there already. Depending on your opinion of Bono, The Edge, and the rest of the Irish rock act (mine is not high), that may be a very good thing or a very bad thing. Coldplay's Brian Eno produced Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends, was, in my opinion, the band's finest record (sorry Rush of Blood to the Head). Pitchfork, historically a Coldplay hater, even liked it. Well, kind of. I guess anything following 2005's boring X&Y had to be better right? Their newest album though, titled Mylo Xyloto, (released on Ocotober 24th) already has me a bit worried about the once lovable Brit Rock balladeers. While the arena ready anthems, heavy strings and melodies, and of course front man Chris Martin's falsetto are still front and center, this album, also produced by Eno, so far seems a bit much in the cheesey-prog rock for my liking, especially this out of left field collaboration with Rhianna(?). Hopefully after more listens, I change my mind. You can judge for yourself of course as the album is currently streaming in it's entirety here.
