Concert Review: Yo Gabba Gabba

There is always a reason to Dance in Buffalo!

On Tuesday, UB's Center for the Arts hosted a a toddler dance party of epic proportions. Yo Gabba Gabba, one of Nick jr's. most talked about shows, presented Buffalo's youngest crowd with heavy beats and lights even the adults were grooving. DJ Lance was on his game with the dance moves and his unforgettable laugh. I give lots of credit to the people stuck under some very unique costumes that are extremely large. And, every one was caught off guard when long time friend of the show, Leslie Hall, came on stage about 50-60 lbs. lighter than the last show she recorded. She looked great, you go girl! We were also treated to a 15 minute segment of 'Biz's beat of the day" with hip hop legend Biz Markie who showcased some serious beat box talent. He had about 20 kids on stage with him and one by one, they completed a series of sounds and I cant quite consider beat boxing, but very cute none the less.

Special music guests, The Pop Ups, sang a song about animals on the subway, as they are from the wonderful NYC. Having just returned home from NYC myself, I can honestly say they got it right while describing the lions, bears. and monkeys on the subway! They were dressed as train conductors, and while one played the guitar and another sang, they acted out some animal moves with large cut out animal heads. As the cast sang 'The Fall Song" paper leaves showered the crowd, immediately followed by the winter song that shed soapy bubbles that resembled snow all over the seats and stage.

The live show very much resembled the episode that featured Jack Black, showcasing the dancy dance move "The Disco Roll" and songs like "New Friends"and of course the good bye song at the end. I'd be lying if I said it wasn't just a little bit emotional when the characters fell to the floor unhappy with the thought of our dance party being over. As the crowd sang "Goodbye, Goodbye, Goodbye see you later, it sure was fun", one by one each character came to the front of the stage and waved a very special so long to their devoted fan base. The show ended with a literal BANG! and the entire room was covered in confetti and ribbon, some of which I am still finding in the oddest of places.

I am sure the Gabba crew made a killing on their pretty highly priced souvenirs and clothing. No child left that show with out a blinking light stick, tee shirt, or character shaped backpack. I am just now starting to see a small amount of Yo Gabba Gabba merchandise in select stores, but generally its a little tricky to get your hands on some genuine Gabba product, which is why parents rushed the merch table. All in all it was a wonderful night and totally worth it to see all the smiles on the children and adults alike. In a world where people often take the little things too seriously, or for granted all too often, Yo Gabba Gabba is a way to find your inner child and dance your little heart out. I will also admit it was so wonderful to be in a room full of adults that are constantly tormented by the catchy songs consistently stuck in their heads, just like mine.
