The 7 Best Fan Videos

You know what sucks? It sucks when you're trying to find a specific song on YouTube and a whole bunch of terrible covers, disappointing live versions, and embarrassing, unofficial fan videos clog up the search results. And the better the song, the worse this phenomenon usually gets. #postmoderndilemmas

But sometimes, you find gold. Some live tapes make you hate yourself for missing a particular show. Some bedroom covers bring new elements to the source material. And occasionally, driven by their love for a band (and an uninterrupted ignorance of the fact that no one asked them to do it), a self-starter of a fan will put together an unofficial music video that's either great... or great because it's so not great. Here are some of the best examples:

7) MGMT - "Kids"

In 2007, some USC students procrastinated on a video assignment and then threw together a handful of shots to go along with MGMT's “Kids,” probably because they were too busy nonchalantly living out the values espoused on Oracular Spectacular. The band actually saw it and were so impressed that they invited the filmmaker and actors to appear in the official video for “Electric Feel.” Bonus points for vapor fame.

6) Owls - "Everyone Is My Friend"

This fan video for Owls' “Everyone Is My Friend” screams “high school.” The director (I'm guessing it's the girl from the beginning) juxtaposes the song's tranquilized, stream-of-conscious feel with shots of a rambunctious, young hair metal group performing in a garage. It so wildly and intentionally misses the point that it hurts the viewer. In a good way.

5) B.o.B - "Lovelier Than You"

What this student film lacks in technical quality (see: atrocious lip-syncing), it more than makes up for in heart. It doesn't stray much from a single tracking shot of a guy walking backwards through his high school, and it reaffirms my sudden and unqualified assertion that almost everything is better in reverse.

4) Whitest Boy Alive - "Burning"

Here's an example of a fan video that's even better than the official one. It's just a grainy clip of a not un-funky white boy dancing, set to Whitest Boy Alive's “Burning.” Watch and learn, and before you know it, you'll be bringing your A-game out of the 2AM bedroom and onto the dance floor.

3) The Police - "On Any Other Day"

Whoever made this unofficial video for The Police's “On Any Other Day,” had a little too much time on their hands, and we are all to benefit from it. Using action figures and stop-motion, the director almost literally conveys the tragically absurd lyrics. And fellas, how much do you hate this; you come home from work and your wife is banging Batman. Am I right, fellas? Am I right?

2) Ariel Pink - "Round and Round"

Forget about syncing Floyd to Oz, you ask me and I'll bet this lines up better. On this fan effort for Ariel Pink's “Round and Round,” the director (editor?) mashed up the song to various clips from the John Travolta/Jamie Lee Curtis 80s aerobics vehicle, Perfect. The resultant video pretty adequately conveys the pastiche and eccentric feel that's so pervasive with Ariel Pink, and it crams about as much of Travolta's package into your eyes as you can bear.

1) Santogold - "I'm a Lady"

This fake, made up video for Santogold's “I'm a Lady” has it all: Robots. Puppies. Cool Clothes. ...Well, it has three things, to be sure. Set on a cardboard-punk, Bushwick-as-fuck rooftop, it tells the story of a puppy that gets rescued by a robot, and everyone has pretty cool clothes, The End.
