After last weekend's unfortunate passing of R&B superstar Whitney Houston, the flood gates opened for praise of the singer. Facebook and twitter were absolutely loaded with people' shock(apparently I was not one of the shocked) and sadness. I found it interesting to see how many bands and artists had commented on her life and death, and gave tribute to her passing, especially from the indie community as one does not normally associate indie rockers with Whitney Houston. One of the last bands I expected a tribute from was San Fran retro rockers Girls. At the Laneway Festival held in Singapore this past weekend, the group took a moment to remember Houston, with a cover of one of her most well known hits "I Will Always Love You". The tune was simply front man Christopher Owens strumming on his guitar, but it came off as very tender and genuine. Not to mention, the crowd seemed to eat it up. Check out the video below to see for yourself.
It's kinda weird that I saw this coming. Owen's music is actually really inspired by gospel music. I read an interview with him where he said he wish he had a better voice so he could sing like gospel/soul music instead of like rock.
