Tonight: Gwar

Gwar might have been overlooked as a novelty act if they weren't so damn good. What started as a project between college students at Virginia Commonwealth University quickly expanded into a large scale production including horrific costumes, intricate set designs, blood, guts, gore and sleaze. Over the past twenty-something years, the band has continued to evolve their live show and presentation; think of a party where the hosts are dirty, chaos-loving monsters. Not one to rest on a gimmick the Gwar crew are as much substance as show. Their crossover punk/metal sound has proven itself to be an enduring sound, in a time when both genres have become stagnant. Check out "Penguin Attack" below to see what I mean. It's part rock'n'roll, part metal and all trash...and it's undeniably good.

Gwar fans should be stoked on the madness. The group is shuffling their way into town tonight at the only venue that could handle their insanity; Town Ballroom. Also on the bill are other metal buzz-bands, Kylesa, Ghoul and Legacy of Disorder. The show is $24, a small price to pay for such a large scale theatrical production. Get there at 6:30 to catch all the bands.
