Brooklyn's finest indie pop duo, Matt & Kim came to Buffalo Saturday night ready to party. Touring in support of their recently released album, Lightning, the band brought their infectious, high energy set to a sold out Town Ballroom. Despite having a few technical difficulties, the band carried on and delivered on every song. Their newest material was welcomed by fans, with the tracks "Let's Go" and "Now" translating well to their simple yet effective approach of fast, loud, and enthusiastic performances of their material. When it comes to bands that put so much of an emphasis on creating a fun environment and just having the best time possible in a live setting, Matt & Kim are on a level with acts like The Flaming Lips.
Singer/Keyboardist Matt Johnson made use of a confetti gun throughout the set and balloons were handed out and bounced around the venue. Drummer Kim Schifino walked out on the hands of the crowd twice during the set to do her "booty shake" dance that shows off what Matt & Kim are really all about; two friends who make music that they care about and are incredibly happy to be playing it for people that can't help but be drawn to the enthusiasm that their songs radiate. The breakdown of the audience/performer barrier is so much of what creates a memorable concert and those in attendance saturday night were involved in an event that felt much bigger than we are used to seeing at one of our local venues. From the singing along of perhaps the duo's biggest hit, "Daylight," to the energy that surrounded their final song, the hook laden jam "Lessons Learned," this was a signature set from a band that will always be at their best when performing live.
