They say only a hundred people actually
listened to the Velvet Underground when they were around, but each of
those hundred people went on to start other bands. Chylde had only
four members when they were tearing up stages around town and beyond,
but each of those four people went on to start other bands. The
group, consisting of guitarists Jon Bobo (White Bison) and Bryce
March (Mordaunt Sisters), drummer Mike Ozimek (Mordaunt Sisters,
Fucking Hotlights), and bassist Thor (Reverend Soapbox, Malarchuk),
made a hefty impact on the local scene while they were active (2007 –
2010). Their combination of astute throwback rock and powerful,
unpretentious riff assault somehow captured the rustbelt zeitgeist,
and the group started to generate some serious buzz – in the days
before you could just let blogs do the work for you, too, when you
actually had to gig like a motherfucker.
As they started to tour more
and more, blasting faces with big guitars in far off lands, something
snapped, and they abruptly called it quits. A lot of hopes in the
Buffalo music scene rested with the group's seemingly inevitable
success, whatever that might've meant, so the news of their demise
hit many like a punch in the gut. Anyway, even in their absence, the
group has affected local music in myriad ways, so it'd be a big
mistake to miss out on their recently announced, upcoming reunion show (Mohawk Place, Sat Nov 24, 6PM). The money goes to a good cause,
too, by the way.
