Tonight: Mohawk Place's Last Waltz - Night Two

So Mohawk Place dies tonight, as we all know by now. There's been a profusion of obituaries in the local press (including this little blog) over the last few weeks. And everyone is getting sentimental, even Spicoli went a few paragraphs without being mean and sardonic. You'd think a fucking dog died or something.

Anyway, there's not really much I can say that hasn't already been said, so I'll keep this brief. The bands that are playing are some of the finest to have ever hit the notorious Mohawk stage over the years: Thermidors, Failures Union, On Beta, Semi-Tough, Roger Bryan and the Orphans, The Old Sweethearts, Johnny Nobody, Handsome Jack, Two Cow Garage, Chylde, and Girlpope. And it's been sold out for a while. I have to lock up to go get drunk at my favorite bar for the last time tonight, fellas. Let's tie ourselves to the mast and set this ship on fire.

(But don't actually, maybe!)

Tonight: Chylde Reunion and Benefit

Buffalo hard rockers, Chylde, will be reuniting tonight for a good cause, joined by four other local bands. Existing only three years (2008-11), Chylde quickly made a name for themselves as one of Buffalo's most exciting acts, blending sludgey, boozey riffs with gravely vocals, their music always seeming to come from another time and place.

Tonight, they are reuniting to perform a benefit for the lead singer,John “Bobo” Bobowicz’s father, John Bobowicz Sr, who was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme, a malignant and very aggressive brain tumor. Proceeds from tonight, including, at the bar and a variety of raffles from local businesses, benefit Mr. Bobowicz Sr.

Chylde will be joined by Handsome Jack, Aircraft, Ancients of Earth, and No Promises, No Regrets. It is definitely a rare opportunity to see some great bands, including the sorely missed Chylde.

Just Announced: Chylde Reunion/Benefit

They say only a hundred people actually listened to the Velvet Underground when they were around, but each of those hundred people went on to start other bands. Chylde had only four members when they were tearing up stages around town and beyond, but each of those four people went on to start other bands. The group, consisting of guitarists Jon Bobo (White Bison) and Bryce March (Mordaunt Sisters), drummer Mike Ozimek (Mordaunt Sisters, Fucking Hotlights), and bassist Thor (Reverend Soapbox, Malarchuk), made a hefty impact on the local scene while they were active (2007 – 2010). Their combination of astute throwback rock and powerful, unpretentious riff assault somehow captured the rustbelt zeitgeist, and the group started to generate some serious buzz – in the days before you could just let blogs do the work for you, too, when you actually had to gig like a motherfucker.

As they started to tour more and more, blasting faces with big guitars in far off lands, something snapped, and they abruptly called it quits. A lot of hopes in the Buffalo music scene rested with the group's seemingly inevitable success, whatever that might've meant, so the news of their demise hit many like a punch in the gut. Anyway, even in their absence, the group has affected local music in myriad ways, so it'd be a big mistake to miss out on their recently announced, upcoming reunion show (Mohawk Place, Sat Nov 24, 6PM). The money goes to a good cause, too, by the way.
