Tonight: Transformers: A Birthday Tribute To Lou Reed

Tonight, Nietzsche's plays host to a tremendous array of Buffalo bands gathered in tribute to Giant of Western Civilization Lou Reed. Starting Saturday night and carrying on into Lou's birthday March 2, High Flyin' Babys, The Good, The Vores, Wooden Waves, After Hours, Dark Marbles, Girlpope, and The Irving Klaws will be exploring Lou's wildly influential career, both his seminal work with The Velvet Underground and years as a vital solo artist, and honoring the Great Man we prematurely lost to liver disease last October. It will be Buffalo's walk on the wild side, downtown adjacent in Allentown, and it can all be yours for $5 at the door. Doors open at 8 PM.

Former Mohawk Place Staples Form The Lindbergh Babies, Release Debut Single

Monday afternoon, The Lindbergh Babies, a new group composed of former Girlpope battery Mark Norris and Brandon Delmont, took to social media and shared its debut single "Only In A Dream (You Set The Scenery)." The track may come as a bit of a left turn for the former Mohawk Place, power pop legends, as the two travel down a much less crunchy path for soft synths, dreamy effects, and floating vocals. The song sounds like it could fit nicely on to the Flaming Lips' Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots record, or even on Beck's Sea Change if the troubadour went for a spacier sound on his recordings. You can find the song on the dream pop duo's forthcoming LP, due out sometime this year (I would think). Listen to "Only In A Dream (You Set The Scenery)" below.

Tonight: Mohawk Place's Last Waltz - Night Two

So Mohawk Place dies tonight, as we all know by now. There's been a profusion of obituaries in the local press (including this little blog) over the last few weeks. And everyone is getting sentimental, even Spicoli went a few paragraphs without being mean and sardonic. You'd think a fucking dog died or something.

Anyway, there's not really much I can say that hasn't already been said, so I'll keep this brief. The bands that are playing are some of the finest to have ever hit the notorious Mohawk stage over the years: Thermidors, Failures Union, On Beta, Semi-Tough, Roger Bryan and the Orphans, The Old Sweethearts, Johnny Nobody, Handsome Jack, Two Cow Garage, Chylde, and Girlpope. And it's been sold out for a while. I have to lock up to go get drunk at my favorite bar for the last time tonight, fellas. Let's tie ourselves to the mast and set this ship on fire.

(But don't actually, maybe!)
