Tonight: Mohawk Place's Last Waltz - Night Two

So Mohawk Place dies tonight, as we all know by now. There's been a profusion of obituaries in the local press (including this little blog) over the last few weeks. And everyone is getting sentimental, even Spicoli went a few paragraphs without being mean and sardonic. You'd think a fucking dog died or something.

Anyway, there's not really much I can say that hasn't already been said, so I'll keep this brief. The bands that are playing are some of the finest to have ever hit the notorious Mohawk stage over the years: Thermidors, Failures Union, On Beta, Semi-Tough, Roger Bryan and the Orphans, The Old Sweethearts, Johnny Nobody, Handsome Jack, Two Cow Garage, Chylde, and Girlpope. And it's been sold out for a while. I have to lock up to go get drunk at my favorite bar for the last time tonight, fellas. Let's tie ourselves to the mast and set this ship on fire.

(But don't actually, maybe!)

Concert Review: Lucero with Two Cow Garage

When I go to shows at the Town Ballroom, I usually go with the mixed drinks; high balls during the fall and winter, gin and tonics ("a golfer's drink" according to Gord Downie) when it's hot out, and rum and cokes anytime. Wednesday night however after a long day at work, the Lucero show downtown with Two Cow Garage had me seriously in the mood to drink beer. I also had the strong urge to drink whiskey, but I was responsible and resisted and focused on the beers and the matter at hand, which was an excellent night of honest American rock, the kind they just can't make anywhere else no matter how hard they try.

I got downtown in time for 20 minutes of Two Cow Garage's set and immediately regretted not getting down there for all of it because they pretty much destroyed it with their high powered garage rock. Tastefully heavy, singer/guitarist Micah Schnabel in particular blew me away with his earnest Rod Stewart on steroids vocals, which fit perfectly with the intense but loose thrash of their garage sound and pleasing earnest, populist lyrical leanings. The modest crowd ate it up to such an extent that the band totally didn't need to butter us up near the end of their set, although that too was of course appreciated. Indeed like fellow Ohioans The Black Keys (who've stiffed us for a show this year), Two Cow Garage definitely seemed to be very simpatico with the enthusiastic local audience. They'll be back, and next time, I'll be there for their whole set.

Getting to a taping of Austin City Limits is on my to-do list; so much great, pure American music has been played on that stage (and show) that in many ways it's one vital pulse points of American music where you can see it all, but in particular country, rock, and soul, the pillars of American music (along with jazz). Well, last night the Town Ballroom felt like the best episode of ACL ever, but even better because I could drink beer while I savored live for the first time Lucero, and band that channels country, rock, and soul sublimely. Shifting blithely from muscular Memphis soul to country rock to country and back, these guys from Memphis Tennessee (hometown of Kaufman "nemesis" Jerry Lawler) are like Nashville's boozy, rambunctious older cousins, the guys most likely to put you in a headlock, sneak you some beer and/or a dirty magazine behind your parents back, and introduce you to juvenile delinquency. Fun, and not of the family variety.

A bunch of dudes who looked like they just came from grabbing a few beers after a shift down at the plant, Lucero put on a show that could be considered the polar opposite of pretentious. They bantered with the crowd, thanking us for being at their show on a Wednesday night- the middle of the working week; they took a few requests; singer/guitarist (and young Billy Bob Thornton impersonator) Ben Nichols graciously accepted free drinks from fans who knew he preferred whiske; and their soulful and occasionally Springsteenesque vibe made everything feel copacetic and all right. There was even a country polka ditty before the big finish, a polka that of course went over well with the Buffalo crowd. Like I said, unpretentious, and warm, and joyous... Lucero with Two Cow Garage was almost like a primo episode of Austin City Limits, but with booze.

Here's an approximate taste of what transpired...

Tonight: Lucero

Tonight, Memphis Tennessee's Lucero brings their punk ethos driven indie country stylings to the Town Ballroom, with opener duties handled by garage rockers Two Cow Garage from Columbus Ohio. Both bands are gonna thrash the hell out of the Ballroom, between the intense, punk tinged country of Lucero and the heavy duty, all out garage rock of Two Cow Garage, I recommend limbering up in advance because neither band is going to hold back. It's going to be a great night to drink beer, smoke cigarettes (in between sets), and rock. Day of tickets are $20 and doors open at 7.

Check Out Live Video Sessions from Buffalo's Newest Studio, Quiet Country Audio

Attention Buffalo: There's a new game in town. A few days ago the Quiet Country Audio site went live with a bang. QCA is a studio out in Alden run by Paul Besch, which hosts live video sessions (similiar to Daytrotter and From the Basement). Thus far, some real legit bands have been featured in this series including Two Cow Garage, Sleepy Hahas, Pentimento, On Beta and Roger Bryan. If you're a fan of any of these bands, and you should be, check out the new site and watch some of the vidz or hear the sessions at QCA's bandcamp page. I have a feeling we're going to be hearing quite a bit from QCA in the future.

Tonight: Two Cow Garage with The Only Sons

Tonight, alt country rockers Two Cow Garage bring their hard edged sound and show to the Mohawk Place, with power rockers The Only Sons. Formed in 2001, in Columbus Ohio, Two Cow Garage is a shotgun wedding of classic country with amped up, incisive rock, while Murfreesboro Tennessee's The Only Sons is straight up 70's rock ala Big Star and early Rod Stewart (according to their website). Please note: early Rod Stewart is good (he went to shite later).

Tickets are $8 and doors open at 8.

Tonight: Micah Schnabel w/Roger Bryan & the Orphans

Micah Schnabel of Columbus band Two Cow Garage will be playing Mohawk Place tonight to celebrate the release of his latest solo record I'm Dead, Serious.  Supporting Schnabel tonight will be buffaBLOG's favorite local act of 2011, the hard driving roots rockers Roger Bryan & the Orphans.  Playing their first show since gracing the stages at the buffaBLOG Holiday Party, Bryan & crew will be performing in a slightly stripped down manner, playing both new and old tracks.  The band plans on putting together a video of tonight's show, and those in attendance can help by downloading a vimeo app for their smart phone and recording live footage of tonight's performances.  From 2/4 - 2/11, videos can be uploaded to vimeo by using the following info:  news@rogerbryanandtheorphans.com(email) and orphans(password).  Just make sure to title the file with your name  for video credits.

Fellow Columbus musician Brandon Barnett of Ghost Shirt will also be playing this evening.  Music begins at 9:00pm with a cover of $5.
