The term "buzz band" sometimes makes me cringe. Don't get me wrong, it's a perfectly appropriate word to describe up and coming bands and I use it often in every day speak. The problem is that it's been used to death and for bands that don't quite deserve it; the go-to descriptor for every lame, goofball hipster group and so-so, not quite great, artist you could ever imagine. I suppose it's not the word so much as the people who use it. Not every band can be a "buzz band". I am objectifying the subjective.
The Men are a "buzz band" I can get behind. In fact, they are the true embodiment of the word. A band on the rise, growing more and more popular each day, exciting audiences with their unique brand of music and captivating live shows. The Men are fantastic, in fact. When I listen to them, I hear Wire, Husker Du, The Replacements, Fugazi and the Buzzcocks all rolled into one incredible package. This is how indie music is supposed to sound!
Tonight, the Brooklyn-based punk rockers will be gracing Buffalo's own Mohawk Place along with two excellent locals in Plates and Johns ($13, 8pm). I implore you to head down. The next time the Men come to town, they will probably be playing a venue much larger. Now's the time to start building credibility, before you inevitably claim they're a bunch of rich sell-outs. Open your heart to the Men.
