Local Artist Spotlight: Mosaics

Just like friends, girlfriends, and times when your favorite sports teams are actually good, bands come and go. The Buffalo music scene has this strange sort of ebb and flow; every day, people who swear they've given music up for the stability of a full-time job come out of retirement to itch that scratch that had been nagging them since they gave it up.

I've seen the men in Mosaics play in bands ranging from ska to hardcore to pop, but this time around, singer Zack Dupuis, guitarists Steve Karpik and Austin Dorr, bassist Andy Wesner, and drummer Jeff Trehy have convened to create something ambient and soaring. They do this without losing the organic feel of five musicians getting into a room together to jam. Full of clean guitars, riffy leads, and an impressive (to say the least) rhythm section, Mosaics has a similar sound to Explosions in the Sky (if they had a singer) or even the atmospheric rock of Lydia. There aren't many bands in the greater Buffalo area doing something in this vein - check out the laid-back groove they fall into in at 1:40 in "By Sea" below.

You can catch Mosaics at their first show on April 25th at the Forvm.  They'll be playing with buffaBLOG favorites Joywave, Colors in the Air, and Space Cubs.
