Listener's Digest: Surfer Blood - "Gravity"

Late this afternoon, Florida indie rockers Surfer Blood released a new single, "Gravity," the second leaked track from their upcoming sophomore album Pythons. Before I get into the song, I have to admit that ever since this happened, I have been hesitant to give the band a second chance. While Stereogum's Chris DeVille wrote a great piece on how the public vilifies someone like frontman John Paul Pitts, whose domestic abuse accusation may or may not have happened, and give a guy like Chris Brown second chance after second chance, I still have kept my distance. But this is a music blog, not TMZ, so I will focus on the music for the sake of this post

Speaking of the music, the new song sounds great. The bouncy riffs recall the good old days of Weezer and even local favs Bryan Johnson & Family, while the band's strongest element, the crisp, boyish vocals of Pitts, continues to impress. That buzz saw of a breakdown only adds to one of my favorite tracks of the year so far, sure to become a summer mixtape staple. Between "Gravity" and the previously released single "Demon Days," Surfer Blood's forthcoming album is shaping up to be one of summer's best. Pythons will be released on June 11th.
