Man, it's been a rough year for music
venues. With the shutdown of Mohawk Place, Soundlab, and the Funeral
Home, there has been a drastic shift in how this city Does Shows. And
now, The Vault is adding itself to that list.
As a dude who frequently performed and
patroned the place, I'm not gonna be telling any tales out of school
that I'm bummed; the Vault was as cool and weird as it gets: from the
pocket gallery set-up, to the nebulously-defined drink policy, to the
weird mix of artists who'd play and put up drawings, it was a perfect
mirror for our bizarre little schizoid town.
Kevin, the idiosyncratic proprietor,
ran the place like he was raising a kid, but, not like a shitty kid
you hate, like one of your Okay kids that you're pretty sure is gonna
turn out alright. After the first time my sloppy punk band played there,
and we were all bummed 'cause we probably screwed up a bunch of
notes, Kevin came up to us and chatted about our songs, like, as if
he had been actually watching the set. It was fucked up!
Anyway, the Vault is closing today, and
as a send off, they're holding a farewell show, beginning at 3pm. And, as an
appropriate denouement for the eclectic, DIY venue, it's going down
Open Mic style (meaning: go there and play). Also, Kevin will be
selling off all the books in the library, and, also it's a potluck apparently.
So.
The Vault was a super cool and weird
place, and if it helped make your life cool and weird, head down to
show your support tonight (702 Main St) because Kevin is shutting that thing down
like Saturn devouring one of his delicious kids.
