Have you ever wanted to see a live recreation of one of your favorite childhood video games? Catch some music in a former chop shop? Spend the day on College Street with some of the neighborhood's more interesting residents? Well, you are in luck. The 2013 Buffalo Infringement Festival is ready to kick off and over the next 11 days, Allentown and its nearby surrounding neighborhoods will be packed to the brim with all kinds of performance and visual arts. Basically, if you cannot find an art installation, a musical performance, poetry reading, or anything else that catches your interest, then I don't know what to tell you. Infringement is a weird, overwhelming festival, but it's also kind of a blast. So, as is our tradition, we have once again decided to summarize the highlights of each day to make your life just a bit easier.
Infringement Busking Collective
Despite being the opening day, Day 1 is always a bit on the slower side until the opening ceremonies kick off. What should always be remembered, though, is that Infringement installations/shows start earlier than your average evening performance. If you happen to be a non 9-5 worker and want to catch some music while the sun is out, head over to Allentown's famed Antique Man(234 Allen St.) for an afternoon full of infringing buskers. It's always a grab bag with buskers, but I would expect some horns, banjos, and other various types of folk folk (see what I did there). Infringement artists all play for free, so make sure to bring a few extra bucks for donations to take care of them.
Slyboots Drum Ensemble/Opening Parade
If you happen to hear an insane amount of percussion around early dinner time, chances are that it's coming from the Nickel City Co-Op(208 North St) over at North and Elmwood. Apparently, if you have a festival, an opening parade comes is par for the course. Slyboots Drum Ensemble will be kicking things off from 5pm-6pm. Co-Op residents have encouraged participants to bring basically anything that makes a noise, so if you like banging on pans and such, this is definitely for you. If you easily prone to migraines like yours truly, maybe keep your distance. Either way, the parade will run from 6:30pm - 8pm. Your guess is as good as mine as to where it will go.
Opening Ceremonies
Despite having installations scattered all over the city, the central hub for all that is Buffalo Infringement is still Nietzsche's, and as I mentioned earlier, the true start to the festival is the opening ceremony. Beginning at 7pm and running all night long, you can expect a variety of acts ranging from folk, electronica, punk, spoken word, and even a juggalo for good measure. Acts will be bouncing back and forth from front to back stage all evening so chances are you will find something you like. If not, Nietzsche's does serve booze. Plus, there is a juggalo.
