Listener's Digest: TV on the Radio - "Mercy"

Brookyln art rock band TV on the Radio have been rather quiet since the death of their founding bassist Gerard Smith last April. While no new album is planned for the near future, the band has just released the heavy, stand alone single "Mercy," the first since 2011's tender Nine Types of Light. To me, TV on the Radio is one of those "can't do no wrong" bands, but man, I don't know about "Mercy." The opening riff couldn't sound more generic, reminding me more of some early 2000's rap-rock song clunker than the genre-bending rockers normal fair. Those big, startling horns, jagged rhythms, and manic vocals that have defined the band since 2002 are really nowhere to be found on this song. Disappointing for sure. You can listen and judge for yourself over at Consequence of Sound.
