Tonight: Garageland: The 12th Annual Joe Strummer Tribute

Joe Strummer changed everything. From the way music was played, to the diversification of genres, all whilst politicizing and advocating for real change. He's the person Bono wished he could have been. A cool rock'n'roller with idea's and the attitude, commitment and grit to see it out. We will miss him.

Tonight, the Rebel Waltz as well as many other bands playing Clash and Mescalaroes tunes will be celebrating the life of Mr. Strummer, as part of the annual Garageland; the long-running Buffalo tribute show. Waiting Room will be the venue (although I'll always associate this night with Mohawk). Tickets are $17 (8pm). It's gonna be a helluva time hearing some of those tunes again.

  1. Why you gotta drag Bono into this? That's cold.

  2. Plus I don't think it's true. Joe Strummer may have been politically hard hitting with his tunes but I don't think he was very politically active outside of speaking his mind and making his music. Which is a lot and seems like enough to me. Bono is a known philanthropist and is outspoken about specific issues. I guess it would be difficult to determine who has had more of a wide and lasting impact. Some may find Bono's willingness to stick his nose in so many issues annoying. But it's not always about what is cool. In fact most times it's not about that. Except for when people want to be attached to something they think is worthwhile without doing any the work.
