Jimi Hendrix is famous for his hits
like “Foxy Lady” and “Purple Haze,” but he is equally as famous for his covers
like “All Along the Watchtower” and his instrumental take on “The Star Spangled
Banner” at Woodstock.
Hendrix would again turn to his guitar to do all of the work for a cover with his rendition of “Little Drummer Boy.” This song appears with his covers of other Christmas classics on the album Merry Christmas &
Happy New Year.
While Bruce Springsteen's cover of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" fit's right in with all of the other Christmas songs on the radio, Hendrix's will stand out for its distorted guitar which is something not usually found in a traditional Christmas song. This is one of the only song's to help get you in the mood for a psychedelic Christmas.
OK, this isn't specifically a "buffaBLOG list," it's my weekly column in the form of a list that reflects my lapsed Catholicism, fondness for dark humor, and capacity for easy amusement...so sue me. Anyway, All Soul's Day. An explanation for the heathen among us: not to be confused with the dubious "holiday" Beggar's Night, All Soul's Day is two days after Halloween, following All Saint's Day and All Hallow's Eve. Basically those crafty Catholics piggybacked a few of their high holy days onto a spooky pagan hootenanny to create a high holy trifecta: the congregation gets to get their ya ya's out evil style before honoring the saints (who are dead by their nature) and then everybody else who's dead. Dia de la muertos. Beautiful stuff really when you think about it.So now that you're ready to scrub some tombstones tomorrow, here's a thoroughly incomplete list of rock stars who happen to be dead and deserving of a moments respect.... Are you experienced? Either way, plan on gaining more at Nietzsche's tonight when The Good Neighborhood presents A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix. The show will feature some of Buffalo's foremost axe-men (as it should... I mean, we're talking about Jimi Hendrix here, the greatest guitarist who ever graced the face of the earth), as well as, special guests performing with each trio.
As you can discern from the above picture, all Jimi, group jams, no repeats... that means you need to get there at the beginning for fear of missing "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" because, well, I'm sure someone is gonna play it.
The show goes to benefit Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper and if a night of Jimi wasn't enough, raffle tickets will be sold at the show to win a kayak from BFLO Harbor Kayak... which we all know is something Jimi would support; take it from him: "it's so groovy to float around sometimes, even a jellyfish would agree to that".
The show starts at 10pm at Nietzsches (248 Allen St... but c'mon, you know where it is) and there is a $5 cover.
Pocket change to see the guitarists who will be performing tonight, if you ask me.
