Tonight, the Good Neighborhood's ongoing Tributaries series at Nietzsche's benefiting the Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper continues with an important installment featuring new original music from the bands that convened 3 weeks ago in honor of Neil Young. Seamus Gallivan's rounded up Bearhunter, Ten Cent Howl, The Albrights, and Astrid Young for a night showcasing their own compositions in an effort to not only do right by our region's waterways, but also our local artists and their art. The doors for this inaugural Tributaries tribute to original music open at 9 with the show starting at 9:30 and non stop music all night long... all for $5.
If you are in the mood for a night of rollicking, roots rock (alliteration galore!), then down to the gem of Amherst Street, the Sportsmen's Tavern, this evening. Blog favorites and Buffalo's alt country torchbearers, Andrew J Remiers CPX, will share the stage with Americana rocker Tommy Brunett as part of the final addition of the Good Neighborhood's Honor Thy Country Series. Reimers and crew will be having their performance filmed for a live DVD so get a good spot and you may make the final cut on the film. Music kicks off at 9:30pm. $5 will not only get you into the bar tonight, but also access to some cheap drinks as the Genny will be a flowin all night for $2 a pint. The Man in Black is a beloved figure in most music circles. Johnny Cash was hardcore before there was hardcore, walking the walk, and keeping things honest, and his birthday is rightly celebrated by fans all over the world. In Buffalo, the Good Neighborhood is taking it further by presenting the 2nd Annual Johnny Cash Birthday Bash tonight at Nietzsche's, with a percentage of the proceeds going to the Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper. For $5, you get the Steam Donkeys, Million Dollar Trio, Shaky Stage, Ten Cent Howl, Andrew J Reimers' Country-Punk Extravaganza, and best of all it's for an exceptional cause... because the Riverkeepers are on the job for us, not the swine always out to take our fresh water. Put on your best black shirt and be at Nietzsche's to honor the man himself. Show starts at 10 PM.
Are you experienced? Either way, plan on gaining more at Nietzsche's tonight when The Good Neighborhood presents A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix. The show will feature some of Buffalo's foremost axe-men (as it should... I mean, we're talking about Jimi Hendrix here, the greatest guitarist who ever graced the face of the earth), as well as, special guests performing with each trio.
As you can discern from the above picture, all Jimi, group jams, no repeats... that means you need to get there at the beginning for fear of missing "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" because, well, I'm sure someone is gonna play it.
The show goes to benefit Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper and if a night of Jimi wasn't enough, raffle tickets will be sold at the show to win a kayak from BFLO Harbor Kayak... which we all know is something Jimi would support; take it from him: "it's so groovy to float around sometimes, even a jellyfish would agree to that".
The show starts at 10pm at Nietzsches (248 Allen St... but c'mon, you know where it is) and there is a $5 cover.

Thanks to ECE Presents, Alan Evans returns to his home town tonight to play one of the funkiest shows you'll see all year at Nietzsche's!!! If you haven't heard of Alan Evans or his most popular band, Soulive, then you should not call yourself a Buffalonian. The Evans brothers and their guitarist Krasno complete the band Soulive and have had huge success in the jazz and jamband scene and are taking a short break while they all pursue different projects. Alan Evans is joined by guitarist Danny Mayer and organist Beau Sasser to perform the new songs Alan has recently written. As always, it will be funky and unbelievably fun. I have seen Evans perform more than any other drummer and I never get tired of how insanely funky and talented this man can play. Also performing tonight are local aritsts Eric Crittenden and Logocity, as well as Rochester's Audioinflux. The show starts at 8 pm with a higher admission price than Nietzsche's usually charges but a well deserved $15 cover. Part of the proceeds go to benefit The West Side and Black Rock/ Riverside Neighborhood Housing Services thanks to the Good Neighborhood.
The Good Neighborhood not only helps some of the best non-profit organizations in our fair city, they put together some of the best local music shows. Tonight is the first night of the Drop-In Sessions at Merge that will repeat every third friday of the month. The show will help raise money and awareness for the Drop In Nation Education program created by Buffalo education advocate Stacey Watson. Every third Friday, DJ Cutler will bring in a different selection of Buffalo's finest musicians to play with. Tonight's show features drummer Shawn Brandel and guitarist Zack Mikida of Peanut Brittle Satellite, guitarist Mike Gantzer of Aqueous, and bassist Andrew Moore from On the Sly and Effective Resolution. The show starts at 10 pm, $5 cover. If you get there early and decide to eat some dinner, I highly recommend trying the fried pickles!
