Tonight: Mayday Tour Kick-Off


This hellish winter has put a spell on all of us, leaving Western NYers drained, stale and, for lack of better words, "over it". So it makes perfect sense that Buffalo surf-punks, Mayday, would name their upcoming tour the "Life's a Beach" tour (It's also an utterly fantastic Kurt Vile jam); a tribute to all things warm, beachy, and awesome. My minds already on to warmer pastures.

 Tour kicks off tonight at the Northrup House (ask a punk, 7pm, $6) with a heavyweight bill of locals including Flood Drinker, known for drinking floods, stoner rock outcasts, Malarchuk, Grain Assault (who I assume assaults grain in their spare time?), and Sexist. A cool show to support a cool local band as they go on a cool tour and, hopefully, have some cool times. And while you're at it, buy Mayday's new EP. I hear it rips.

Tonight: Pontiak


Pontiak is a tricky band to categorize; they've put out 9 records in that many years, and when the three musician brothers from some weird, sketchy farm in Virginia plopped on the national music-scape around 2009, they were putting out some mostly straight-forward doom metal. Mostly. It was some tummy-rumbling doom/grunge metal for sure, but the trio seem to have a solid command over overt, genre-defying textures. Maker, for instance, was a seminal record, and showed a stoner group that wasn't afraid to be super-stoner-ey, and still pop back into strange Americana territory for an occasional delta blues riff-out before some distorted, grumbly bass and a droney voice would viscerally remind the listener that "oh, yeah, you are definitely having a ghastly weed nightmare, you smoked too much weed, but oh yeah guess what, Freddy Krueger is here." 

 Since, the band has expanded on it's folkier influences, but hasn't abandoned its propensity for loudness - like if Will Oldham had Kyuss backing him on some Sleep covers. And they are playing the Ninth Ward in Buffalo tonight (341 Delaware Ave., 8PM, $8), with Buffalo's own Maitre D's of doom, Malarchuk. Be sure to check it out, especially if you regularly have to search for your Sabbath LPs in your Neil Young record sleeves.

Tonight: Malarchuk with Second Trip and Black Thai


Metal band Malarchuk will be playing Duke's Bohemian Grove Bar tonight, with fellow locals Second Trip (jam/prog) and Boston's Black Thai (heavy metal). Catch the show at 9PM-- it's only FIVE BUX!

Tonight: Blood Red


Tonight, The Lair will be hosting an extravaganza not to be missed. If you like being a little dirtehh, this show will get you feeling grimy as hell with Braddock, PA-based train-wreck punkers Blood Red, Buffalo's doom metal Malarchuk and sassy-ass, funky-punky Cross Stitch. 

Blood Red, if you didn't know, is comprised of members from noise-punk band Pissed Jeans, hardcore outfit Hounds of Hate, and internationally-traveled thrashcore R.A.M.B.O. A fantastically diverse collaboration across the punk rock board, Blood Red comes together with the best of all worlds (cliche aside) for an anticipated BEST. SHOW. EVAH.

With the injection of heavy Malarchuk and feminine relief Cross Stitch, the balance of genres invites you to revel in a night of all-American punk. Tickets are $6. Doors open at 6PM. And insert a third 6, for whatever you damn well please.

Tonight: Ghost Box Orchestra


Tonight lovers of fuzzed out instrumental space rock need to get to the back room at Allen Street Hardware when Boston psychedelic band Ghost Box Orchestra ply their trade. That excellent space ought to be perfect for their expansive soundscapes and heavy X-Files vibe, and with Malarchuck and Ancients Of Earth, you're $5 will go far...  into the unknown. The show starts at 10 PM.

Tonight: Merchants, Evil Things, Ancients of Earth, Malarchuk


The other week, I saw Iration - a sunshine reggae band - at Waiting Room. It was a pleasant experience. Tonight, I'm going to a show in the basement of a house on the west side, a show that features the return of a band named after an ex-Sabres goalie who once had his jugular slashed during the middle of a game. The show will be a lot of things, but pleasant might not be the word. It will be painful, probably. It will be scary. And that is exactly how these bands like it.

 I'm a rookie here, because I've never been to the venue, and I'm a rookie here, because I'm using the word venue. But these are four of the best bands to be trapped inside of a basement with, and I'm pretty fucking excited about it.

Show starts at 9. Bring a flask and a couple of bucks to donate.

Tonight: ronaldraygun CD/Comic Release Show


We have been writing about ronaldraygun for a couple years now and the most difficult thing is always the spelling/capitalization of the name. Sometimes its one word, sometimes two. Sometimes its all in caps, sometimes it isn't. Sometimes there is an exclamation point. You get the idea.

 Anyways, however you spell it, the scuzzy grunge-punk act is releasing their latest album, titled cd two, this evening at Nietzsche's. Also, because this is a thing now, the band is releasing a comic book along side of the CD, featuring illustrations from local artists Mickey Harmon and Sarah Liddell. Local support includes Jump the Blinds, electronic songstress Space Cubs, and the return of doom rockers Malarchuk, not to mention the always reliable Shaken Stylus spinning choice cuts of vinyl all evening. Party kicks off at 9pm with a $5 cover.

Tonight: Royal Thunder w/ Malarchuk and Ancients of Earth


Make hump day heavy with Royal Thunder!  The Atlantan rockers are on the first stretch of a tour that takes them everywhere from Toronto to Corpus Christi as they perform 24 shows over the course of 30 days.  My initial impression as I listened to the first few songs off their debut full length album CVI, was that they sounded a lot like Wolfmother with female vocals (female vocals make everything better).  As I continued to listen through the album, however, I found the structure of many of their songs to be more intricate and orchestrated than the straight-ahead rock of Wolfmother.  The album unfolds into a less growly type of Mastodon feel -- the torch carriers of Atlantan metal (but don't forget, half of Mastodon is from Rochester, NY!).

The vocals of Mlna Parsonz cut through the grimy sludge of the instruments to give an overall energetic and tight sound.

Playing in support this evening are Buffalo's own doom rockers, Malarchuk and Ancients of Earth.

All in all, expect a trio of awesomely heavy performances tonight and plan on waking up tomorrow morning with a ringing in your ears!
