Tonight: Evil Things, Pine Fever, and Andrew Biggie

Tonight will be the grand opening party for Picasso Moon at Nietzsche’s (260 Allen St). Now, you might be saying to yourself, “Hey, how is this Picasso Moon’s grand opening party if they have been open all summer, literally day and night, according to the fluorescent 'Open' light, which is on 80% of the time?” Yeah, I don’t know either. Regardless, there will be a bunch of bands playing the front and back stage, along with drink and prize giveaways.

The night features numerous bands, including folk-stomp act Evil Things, who sounds almost like a vaudeville Tom Waits. Continuing the Americana theme will be Pine Fever, a ragtime-y straight forward roots-rock band that fans of Man Man or Modest Mouse would enjoy. Wistful singer-songwriter Andrew Biggie is on the bill as well. Fans of Andrew Bird or Joanna Newsome should take note when this ukulele-ist sits Indian Style on the floor unmic-ed: make sure to gather round, because that is when he is in his element. Doors are $5 and the show should start around 9pm.

Tonight: Merchants, Evil Things, Ancients of Earth, Malarchuk

The other week, I saw Iration - a sunshine reggae band - at Waiting Room. It was a pleasant experience. Tonight, I'm going to a show in the basement of a house on the west side, a show that features the return of a band named after an ex-Sabres goalie who once had his jugular slashed during the middle of a game. The show will be a lot of things, but pleasant might not be the word. It will be painful, probably. It will be scary. And that is exactly how these bands like it.

I'm a rookie here, because I've never been to the venue, and I'm a rookie here, because I'm using the word venue. But these are four of the best bands to be trapped inside of a basement with, and I'm pretty fucking excited about it.

Show starts at 9. Bring a flask and a couple of bucks to donate.

Tonight: The Evil Things, Pig Banshee, Malik Saint & The Violators

A super messy confluence of rock and roll at Nietzsche's tonight. If you missed The Evil Things at DBGB's last week, they'll be bringing their debauched garage back around again. Joining them will be Rochester's Pig Banshee, who sound like their name, with a touch of the Stooges here and some GG Allin there. Also, in what I THINK will be their first local performance, Malik “The Guy Who Runs Shaken Stylus and Dubstep Demolition” Saint has assembled a haggard crew under the name The Violators to help him kick out some metaphysical jams. 248 Allen Street. 9 PM. 5 bucks. Go there. Drink and concuss your skull. You only live once.

(I couldn't find tapes of any of these bands, so here's some Raw Power)

Tonight: The Evil Things & The Fairweathers

The weather forecast for tonight says it will still be above 60 degrees in Buffalo at 9pm.  That is great news for those of us who want to go out and see some awesome rock n' roll this evening and pretend it is a glorious Thursday in late June.

There will be a riot in Allentown tonight when The Evil Things and The Fairweathers invade DBGB's at 253 Allen Street.  Both bands call Buffalo home and each brings their own unique style of stripped down, take no prisoners, rock.

The Evil Things are steeped in Americana and roots rock styling,  The rhythm section is anchored by walking bass lines delivered on a stand-up bass while the melodies are sweetened by the wonderful honk of a saxophone.

The Fairweathers (pictured above) pay homage to the optimism of the 1950's with a delectable brand of music that combines space age pop with lo-fi garage and pre-Beatles rock n' roll.  Shimmering, punchy guitar is the big draw here.  "Another Stray", the song below, takes me out of my house and transplants me directly on a boardwalk somewhere with an ice cream cone and roller skates.

These two bands are perfect for a beautiful day like today... I think I might go to the beach now, see you tonight on Allen!
