buffaBLOG 4th Birthday Party Artist Spotlight: Mr. Boneless

Well, how about Mr. Boneless kicking off buffaBLOG’s 4th birthday party? No time to sit down, order a light beer and settle down; nope, they are going to get things started with a bang. Their music, thankfully, has much more depth than the bio offered on the band’s Facebook page: Elliott met Nate who met Joe whom all met Brian in the summer of 2010. Sure, Brian sounds like a lucky son of a bitch, but surely there is more to their story than what they are telling us.

To find out more, check them out Saturday night at buffaBLOG’s party (and keep an eye out for a new Boneless album this summer). So far, they’ve filled a void left by Merchants’ semi-uncertain future, in that I listen to them and want to become more of a man. When Elliot sings, he uses every bit of throat that he’s got; picture, if you will, a dog getting a bone lodged in its throat and using every ounce of energy he’s got to dislodge it. That’s a pun within an analogy for you; my work here is done.

Check them out Saturday at Duke’s. They’re batting leadoff and will go on right at 10:30. Tickets are $5.

buffaBLOG Holiday Party Artist Spotlight: JOHNS

The last year or so has been a weird, transitional one for the Buffalo music scene; from venue shut-downs and band breakups, to new DIY spaces and group formations, the city has been refusing to sit still. Meanwhile, we've been treated to some real good acts in the interim, including some awesome output from locals JOHNS. Their stuff has become somewhat of a staple among a lot of the buffaBLOG staff, making a lot of our year-end best-of's and playlists. So we're super-stoked to have them perform at our annual Holiday Party at DBGB's this Saturday.

At turns angular and atmospheric, JOHNS do some visceral and beautifully ugly post-punk. Temple Of FalseLove, the space rock chamber pop grunge noise tape they put out last month demonstrates a band that has an incredible sense of space, texture, timing, and hooks, but their live show is something else; they add so much raw energy to the material that ya might not recognize them as the same band (see: more guitar distortion, yelling). You can dance to it or you can cut to it or you can pick up a random or you can drunktext your dad, whatever you do whenever something is way loud and moving. If you've gotten into any of their recordings so far but haven't had a chance to see them perform it, make that be a Thing That Isn't A Thing anymore, and come down to Duke's on Saturday as they close out the bill. And then thank us when you've finally shaken the hangover come Monday.

Tonight: Smif N Wessun

Tonight, Brooklyn duo Smif N Wessun comes to DBGB, and it might be extremely crowded inside. They are kind of a big deal, and Duke's is, like, kind of a small place. So it's going to be an awesome show, and a bit of a tight squeeze. They are on tour promoting their new album Born and Raised, which is a smooth blend of reggae and straight fire. You hear reggae and hip hop mentioned in the same sentence and you may immediately think of Snoop Lion and other terrible things, but this is different, in that what they are trying to do actually works.

The show will start around 10. Tickets are $10, and can be purchased here.

Tonight: Kool Keith

Kool Keith, the enigmatic iconic cult MC, goes by many monikers (Black Elvis, Matthew, Dr. Octagon, etc.). The common theme throughout all of his work is abstract "crazy;" a preoccupation with sex, space and the bizarre. These concepts manifest themselves through an almost psychedelic prism of trip-hop beats and often hilarious lyrics. Even during his days with Ultramagnetic MC's, there was something a bit off about Keith's eccentric rap verses and his odd manner of flow. But hey? True genius is rarely understood.

Keith will be in Buffalo tonight performing a rare club appearance that has many hip-hop heads and superfans excited. It's not often you get a chance to see hip-hop of this magnitude hit our city, and for that I'm appreciative. Duke's is the place. 10pm is the time. Get there early to catch support from DJ Lopro, DJ BRSKNRG, Frigid Giant and Natural Ingredients.

Tonight: Early Attic Album Release Party

Buffalo band Early Attic combine elements of both electronic and indie rock to create a sound reminiscent of artists like MGMT, the Flaming Lips, and The Postal Service. Using sampling and drum loops, along with live instrumentation, the band is able to achieve a cohesive, laid back vibe that seamlessly transitions from sprawling post rock to electro pop. The group's debut full length album, Parallels, marks a shift towards a more electronic sound and as a result have recorded some of their most ambitious material to date. Tonight at Duke's, Early Attic will perform to celebrate the release of Parallels with support from indie pop artist Go Exploring, who has some impressive album art for his January release Adventures. Also on the bill tonight are local experimental duo Armageddon Party and Dante Velour. Show starts at 9pm.

Tonight: Electric Love

There's going to be an awesome dance party at Duke's Bohemian Grove Bar tonight! New Horizon Events brings you Electric Love, a night designed for positively letting loose. Electric Love will feature some of Buffalo's best dance music aficionados. This includes Swagglerock, aka Buzz Trillington and Shooter Mcnappin both of whom have been very productive of late with their own music. When put together they are an unstoppable duo of party adaptation. Sunglasses Mike and The Owski will also be on the decks this eve. The both of them are two of Buffalo's best talents, with a specialty of making dance music mixes sexy and provocative. Also performing will be C-Perfect and a surprise special guest DJ! Just added to sponsor the event will be Red Bull, which means there will be featured drink specials if your into destroying yourself.

This event is 21+ Cover charge of $3 at the door. Show begins at 10pm, Duke's Bohemian Grove Bar 253 Allen st. Buffalo, NY.

Tonight: Archie Powell & The Exports

Chicago's Archie Powell and the Exports are making a stop at DBGB's tonight.  Full of frantic verses and melodic choruses, these guys craft smart and cynical songs that represent the new age of garage rock - led by the unfortunately unemployed rather than the unemployable slackers of the early 2000's.  Local support comes from The Screaming Jeans and Made Violent.

DBGB's is hosting this one at 9:00pm.  They didn't specify a price, but it can't be THAT expensive.

Tonight: Hidden Hospitals

Chicago progressive alternative rock band Hidden Hospitals will headline a showcase of both local and national alt rock talent tonight at Duke's. The band released their debut, EP 001 in 2011 and their follow up EP 002 last October, both of which are set to be released on vinyl this April. Buffalo indie rockers I Can See Mountains, who released their EP I Hope You Never Get It last year on Panic Records will open tonight's show. Also opening are Albany post-hardcore band Voices. Doors open at 9 and tickets can be purchased at the door for $8.

Tonight: Coolzey and Raashan Ahmad

Tonight Duke's on Allen has a killer lineup of up and coming indie hip-hop artists for your listening pleasure when Coolzey and Raashan Ahmad's Tour De Force tour takes over. These dudes have travelled from all over the country to be here with us tonight, with Dallas Center Iowa's Coolzey and the Bay Area's Raashan Ahmad bringing their sharp, off kilter and left field lyrical stylings and interesting beats to the heart of Allentown. Also on the bill will be Toronto's Philly Moves (making a Buffalo debut), Brooklyn by way of Buffalo mc Rabbi Darkside, and representing for Buffalo will be Koolie High. Tickets are $5 and the show starts at 10 PM.

Tonight: Doin' Dilla - A Benefit for the J Dilla Foundation

James Dewitt Yancey, better known as J Dilla, was a Detroit producer who is widely regarded as one of the most gifted and influential figures in the history of hip-hop. His most celebrated work includes instrumentals for A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes, The Pharcyde, The Roots, Common, De La Soul, along with his own Detroit based Slum Village. Dilla's style was characterized by his eclectic sampling taste that included classic soul vocals and elements of jazz, funk, and Latin music.

In 2006, Dilla lost his long battle with lupus and the blood disease thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. Committed to carrying on his legacy, his mother, Maureen Yancey, established the J Dilla Foundation with the mission of funding inner-city music programs, and to provide scholarships to students attending schools that have progressive music curricula.

Tonight at 10, Duke's Bohemian Grove Bar will be hosting a benefit for the foundation featuring performances from the legendary Dilla discography. DJ Billy Drease Williams will be spinning tracks all night along with a special Dilla breaks set by DJ Cutler. Admission is $5 at the door with all proceeds going to the J Dilla Foundation.

Tonight: Sports & Son of the Sun

Tonight might as well be a showcase for two of western NY's best rock bands. Son of the Sun, from Buffalo, deliver indie flavored rock'n'roll in heavy doses. Some of their songs remind me of the Church, and that is always a good thing.

Representing Rochester is Sports, a joyous, pre-punk band with melodies for days. My immediate impression is Elvis Costello goes surfing or maybe the Beach Boys...not necessarily in sound but in vibe. They're good.

Anyways, they're playing tonight at DBGB's at 9pm for only $5. You should go.

The Drum Machine Report

This blog post is an vehicle to reach-out to the readers of buffaBLOG who like Electronic and Dance music. The Drum Machine Report is a preview of events and commentary about things involving EDM and Buffalo. Many times I’ve chilled up here on my high-horse and used this opportunity to express my opinions about genre nomenclature and respecting others taste in music, and I implore you to allow me to do so right now. I overheard a young gentleman inquiring of a group of younger gentlemen if they had ever heard of “trap” music. They kind of seemed dumbfounded so the first man listed of some examples of music they may have heard of, Bassnectar? Excision? Diplo? Drop Rari? What! What is that? You can’t do that! I’ll grant that he wasn’t particularly categorizing these all as being “trap” necessarily, but THIS is my problem. I understand that he was just being nice and trying to connect something recognizable for the kids, but this is why young people say Skrillex is Dubstep and Deadmau5 is House. Why must these constrictors be shackled on to on an artist by people and media? I hate genre names, yet they are a necessary evil. For example Two Fresh is playing tonight at Duke’s, how would you describe them? Hip-Hop? Electronica? Trap-House? I don’t fucking know! I definitely wouldn’t have described them as Trap-House when I saw them three years ago at Camp Bisco! I would’ve said they were Hip-Hop fusion, and I would have been wrong, because it doesn’t fucking matter! If you like a certain kind of music than you like it. It does not matter what other people call it or how you describe it to them--even if you love Skrillex (sorry Sonny you’re always my go-to). I’ll come down now and just humbly ask everyone reading to respect music and how everyone chooses to appreciate it.

Well shit. Now let’s tell you about what’s going on this weekend.

The Drum Machine Report

Like the air temperature this winter, the climate of collective consciousness is constantly fluctuating in Buffalo. Us positivists are constantly shielding a barrage of bitterness and negativity grown out of many years of hardship and loss. Alas, we are the weight to balance these ideas, the youthful minds who will soon take over this city and lift it forward into the future! The work of change is never-ending, and only willing will rise up.

With the new year comes new happenings. It is a blessing to have some fresh things going on with a couple of new events happening this Friday. The Drum Machine Report focuses on what events and parties are going on that feature all styles of dance music every weekend in the Queen City. Check out what's happening now:

NEKTAR
451 Elmwood Ave. Buffalo, NY
The Guestbook Party is a fresh party for designed for Buffalonians who love EDM to experience something cutting-edge. The idea is to trend away from the misconstrued ideas of what dance music is currently on Chippewa. Lets face it, Buffalo nightclubs are trashy and stupid by comparison to those in big cities. But we as patrons of these venues, and aficionados of dancefloors are not oblivious to what's new and hot. DJ DSTAR and Promoter Sean Coughlin are wanting to bring a small taste of that big-city flavor to the upstate. DSTAR who is one half of the buzzworthy Solidisco is going to be playing mostly Deep House and NuDisco. Nektar is not the first place you think of for a party, but it should be interesting to see what kind of crowd is drawn in. Check out some of the Solidisco music below through their Soundcloud and hear why they are quickly gaining more attention on the national level.

DUKE'S BOHEMIAN GROVE BAR
253 Allen St. Buffalo, NY
Another new event happening on Friday is a monthly starting at Duke's called the Senior Discount Buffet. They're going along with the theme that these DJs are going to serve up a buffet of different EDM music for your pleasure. Featuring the styles of House, Techno, Bass, Electro, DnB, and Bass music. This night is also going to feature many new DJs that I haven't ever heard of. So it will be interesting to check this out in the coming months. New music below is from EYES EVERYWHERE, the boys formerly known as hxly.

10p-4a
$5/21+
OHM ULTRA LOUNGE
948 Main St. Buffalo, NY
Installment 2 of Local Pressure. Loki has gathered a mob of local talents to fill that boxed dancefloor at OHM with some Bass music and Drum N Bass. This time around features the sets from PERCEPTOR, along with MJ BIGGZ, BETA, MIXMASTER BATES, POTENT J and other friends. Listen to the latest mix from Smitty PERCEPTOR below. Respect!

MIXOLOGY
443 Forest Ave. Buffalo, NY
Everybody loves Igloo Music! Such positive vibes and great House music fill the air every time this party goes down. This night will feature sets from CHUCK ABBOTT, PAUL KUENZI, BRANDON CHASE, GREG HOWZE, and LANCE UPPERCUT-who I believe is Kyle Moody's alter-ego. Guess you'll just have to go to find out!

Any submissions for The Drum Machine Report please forward to buffaBLOG, and keep those dancing shoes shinning Buffalo. Much Love.

The Drum Machine Report

Perhaps the best is yet to come. 2013 will be hard pressed to top last year in the number of great shows and events happening in Buffalo.  There is a bleak outlook for what has been announced. Many spring tours that were announced already left Buffalo out of the loop. We'll see. Things seem to work out. Buffalo will continue to trend upward both musically and artistically.

This weekend getting down on the dance floor will not be difficult. Check out these two cool events going on Friday night.

Frosty Tone and Duke's bring you DIRECT FEED tomorrow night. Known by many aliases David Houser has channeled all of his work as a DJ/Producer into Direct Feed. He plays music like Ragga-Jungle and Electro, and he is certainly no stranger to Dubstep. Check out the mix below containing a variety of genres. Many local supporting DJs on the bill, but most notably BETA and BROTHER BEAR both making their return to a Frosty Tone bill.

It may be a new year, but there's more of the same great stuff coming from Culture. Happening on the First Friday of every month, Culture is a party that combines the appreciation of visual art along with the entertainment of music! This week will feature the art of 464 Gallery artists, Marcus Wise and Ryan Mis. Also this is the first weekend that the show Culture will be a stop on the Greater Allentown First Fridays Gallery Walk. This installment of Culture will have music played by BFLO LYDIA, THE OWSKI, and TRAKBENDERS. All of whom will be playing on all vinyl!!! So if you'd rather be all in for some house music come and check out culture.

It helps a little that these two parties are directly across the street from each other. If you like a little flavor from both, it will be easy to hop from joint to joint. Much love.

Tonight: Canary Girls and On Beta

Two quickly rising local bands, Canary Girls and On Beta, headline a double bill tonight at Duke's Bohemian Grove Bar. The debut album from Canary Girls, Everything is Changing, has been well received here at the blog and features 80's style electronic pop. Indie pop trio On Beta co-headline the show who released their debut You've Got Blood in Your Heart on Harvestsum recordings earlier this year. Following both sets is The Night Owl DJ's. Show starts at 10pm.

Tonight: I Can See Mountains

Buffalo's I Can See Mountains play the kind of feel-good punk music that seems to exist solely to let everyone have a good time.  Their seven-song release, Hope You Never Get It, is a collection of messy, fun pop punk (because you know they're jumping around while they're playing it) chock full of sing alongs and a seemingly endless number of vocalists.  Their songs are simple to comprehend.  It's all about friendship and having a great time and that makes for a light-hearted listen.

They'll be playing tonight at DBGB's with fellow Buffalo pop-punk in All Blondes Go To Heaven as well as Sleepy Hahas and The Traditional.  The show is $8 - doors are at 9:00 PM.

Tonight: Jeff Bujak

Hopefully, you've had a chance to see Jeff Bujak perform live by now since he gets to come to Buffalo pretty often... if not... tonight's the night.  Jeff Bujak is an electronica producer who uses several keyboards and effect pedals to create an inventive and energetic sound.  He is a one man live electronic act that is too much fun to pass up. If you aren't entertained enough by observing his musical abilities, his light set up will definitely tickle your fancy. Also new to his show is Jen Dulong, a hula hooper from what the image above looks like has several glowing hula hoops that she dances with on stage. It honestly looks like a ton of fun. Local support tonight will come from the now three piece Early Attic, who will be debuting some new music and closing the night will be some sets from The Late Night Owl DJs.  The show starts at 10 pm sharp and there is a $5 cover.

Tonight: The Andrew J. Reimers CPX Album Release Show

Alt country rockers the Andrew J. Reimers Country-Punk Extravaganza, or CPX to relieved carpal tunnel fans, have been making a name for themselves over the last year and change for their rather energetic and rambunctious performances.  Carrying the torch of the modern alt country bands like Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Whiskeytown, and even early Wilco, the band exhibits both the roots and snarl of the country and punk genres respectively, thus the name.  That trend should continue tonight at DBGB's as the five piece band will be celebrating the release of their very good debut LP Wide Right Blues.  Support will come from local three piece folk group I'm Happiest When and more.  Cover for tonight is only $5, and while you are there, pick up a copy of the album, as all proceeds from first day album sales proceeds will go towards Wings Flights of Hope.  Music begins at 8:30pm.

Tonight: Soulpatch

What do you think of when you think of the nineties? Is it the fashion? The music? The state of the world at that time? Or is it the soulpatch?...that abhorrent clump of hair portruding from the bottom lip that somebody was crazy enough to say "this looks cool". Well it doesn't. Under no condition does a soulpatch look cool.

Fortunately Soulpatch the band is pretty cool. I mean they obviously have a sense of humor to call their band Soulpatch. Plus it's pretty cool that the band is an all nineties cover band featuring Keith Buckley and Steve Micciche of Every Time I Die and Joey Dynamite and Niko Georgiadas of Quintana. I also think it's cool their playing tonight at DBGB's (10pm) along with DJ Dante Velour.

Do yourself a favor. Go see Soulpatch tonight at DBGB's. And if you have a soulpatch go to the barbershop, have him shave that thing off your face and tell him you're sick of looking like an asshole.

Local Artist Spotlight: All Blondes Go to Heaven

All Blondes Go to Heaven are one of Buffalo's newest offerings, having just formed earlier this summer. Their songs are urgent and sincere, reminiscent of a band you'd find playing a packed basement show full of kids singing louder than the music itself. At times, it almost seems as if the band has a dozen members. Surprisingly, there are only five - guitarists Brett Mikoll, Chris Bryant and Alex Tiberia, bassist Mike Driscoll, and drummer Andy DeLuca. They employ an interesting dynamic in that every member sings, seemingly whenever they feel appropriate. The result is a blend of honest indie and pop rock full of sing-alongs.  All Blondes Go to Heaven could have come straight from the late 90's or early 2000's, but they also sound fresh and contemporary.

Their debut offering, the six-song the trick is to always look down, right? falls somewhere on the spectrum between 90's heroes Sunny Day Real Estate and the atmospheric emo-rock of The Appleseed Cast. You can find it on bandcamp where they are currently offering it at a "name your own price" rate. DBGB's is hosting their first show on September 29th with fellow Buffalo bands I Can See Mountains, The Traditional, and Sleepy Hahas.
