Tonight: Rusko

Tonight, Rusko returns to Buffalo for a big show at Town Ballroom. He just released a new EP, Lift Me Up, on OWSLA, Skrillex's record label, and is currently on a large-scale production tour of North America. The tour is coming off a stop in Toronto at Sound Academy on Saturday night, and this leg of the run will feature an opening set by Drum and Bass legend Roni Size who will be joined by MC Dynamite. The two big-name producers on a bill together would sell out anywhere in the UK; this show will be well-attended. Pre-Sale tickets were going for $27.00 and may still be available HERE. Also performing tonight will be fan-favorite Hoogs and SwaggleRock.

Check out the tracks from the Lift Me Up EP on Rusko's Soundcloud page below.

Tonight: Profile and MC Funsta

London Drum and Bass artists DJ Profile and MC Funsta will be performing tonight live at Duke's Bohemian Grove Bar. The tandem are both well respected individually in the DnB scene and together they will be one heavy hitting act. Stopping off in Buffalo by way of NYC then off to Toronto tomorrow, the duo have just two more North American shows before heading back over the Atlantic to the UK. See below what MC Fun the Funsta posted on his Facebook wall this morning about playing in Buffalo tonight.

There will be an $8 cover at the door and only 21+ will be admitted. The show will begin around 10pm and will also feature DJs FLEX, KILLSOUND, JOS3, ALLDAY, and ALPHA FLIGHT KREW of Fort Erie, who I'm fairly certain spells their name with a "K" contrary to the flier.

Tonight: The Best of Drum & Bass Tour 2013 feat. AK1200 & Dara

Tonight, two of the most prolific Drum and Bass DJs will team up for a show of epic proportions at the Town Ballroom. Thirteen years ago, AK1200 (Dave Minner) and Dara (Darragh Guilfoyle) joined forces with Dieselboy and MC Messinian to make the DnB supergroup Planet of the Drums. The idea was to earn respect for the style and to move Drum and Bass to the main stage. In 2009, Planet of the Drums went on their 10th anniversary tour, and was determined to be the longest-running annual national Electronic Dance Music tour ever. Then in 2010, they switched to one-off shows and appearances at major festivals, but the legacy of that journey lives on. AK1200 and Dara have embarked on this current tour to keep that dream alive.

The Town Ballroom is prepped for an influx of junglists and fans coming out of the woodwork to resurrect the relics of a music that has thankfully remained underground and in our hearts.

In lieu of diversity for musical preferences, tonight's party features another room focusing on a mixture of other Dance music styles. The show boasts a late cutoff time, a rarity for the Ballroom. Many other very talented artists will be playing in support including DJ Flex of Rochester, Alpha Flight Krew of Fort Erie, and Paul Kuenzi of Buffalo.

For a full list of the artists and set times, visit the Facebook event page HERE. The event is All Ages. Tickets are $20 pre-sale and $25 at the door. Show time is 9pm-2am. This event is presented by Buffalo DnB and La Selva in association with MNM Presents.

Listener's Digest: Robyn - "U Should Know Better" feat. Snoop Dogg (Carli & Savage Skulls Remix)

This new remix of Robyn's excellent collaboration with Snoop Dogg gives boost to the song's relevance two years after it's original release. A days ago, Robyn briefly discussed the new take on the song on BBC's Radio One. The remix begins as if it were a hardstyle techno track, but the drop hits and the trap trunk opens right up. It's a little more intricate than that though. In the breakdown, there is clear use of the "Amen Break" as a fill, bringing a little drum and bass into the equation and making this remix a complex composition. Below, you'll find that discussion, along with the Carli & Savage Skulls remix, as well as the original song from her album Body Talk.

The Drum Machine Report

Saint Patrick's Day weekend-the best excuse to get drunk that Buffalonians have. Admittedly my favorite, and only "drinking" holiday that I'll accept in context. Aside from the Irish parties there are some happenings on the dancefloor that you should know about beginning with a Drum and Bass party tonight in the heights...

Shamrock Shakedown was one of the parties last year at Dnipro that got people more familiar with that space as a party spot. This year the party features CJ MILLI who is one of the top female DJ/Producers in the country. There's also a bunch of DJs and tandem artists on this bill that I have never heard of before, but am quite intrigued about seeing. There's four rooms and massive sound promoted, so if you're looking to party on Saturday night, this is where it will be.

Also going on this weekend is EXCISION performing live at Rapids Theater in Niagara Falls on Friday night. Excision, being as popular as he is actually has a strong following in this region. Every show he's played here has been well attended.

The Drum Machine Report

It is not uncommon for an opener to upstage a headlining act. This is happening more frequently, and when it does it's always kind of funny, or pleasantly surprising! Last Saturday at Duke's, HOOGS played right before   MISTANOIZE on a Bass-centric bill. Though I'm usually impressed with HOOGS, I have to say I was blown away. The Drum and Bass he was playing transported me back to high-school. If you have never checked out his productions, I would strongly encourage you to do so, because that is one guy who by experience is creating underground music correctly.

This weekend, Buffalo will feature a big-name artist from the UK who is a local fan favorite. A little over a year ago, CASPA took the stage at Town Ballroom and showed our people why he is one of the best! After getting rave reviews from the show last year, MNM Presents is bringing him back for round number 2. Fans of dubstep will converge on the Ballroom tomorrow night for this momentous and hopefully annual occasion; let us as fans of EDM show him our appreciation for his music and the culture in general. For more information and the other events going on this weekend, carry on.

Tonight: Bass Mountain Winter Massive

The place to be tonight will be the Bass Mountain Winter Massive presented by Loki Dnb and which features headliners TERRAVITA and SHIFTEE. The trio of Terravita is comprised of Matt Simmers, Chris Barlow and Jon Spero. They are patriots of American Dubstep and Drum & Bass, and have been flying the flag saliently for the crossover styles that combine the two. This group has helped to popularize Drumstep and Jump-up. Also featured onstage will be another exquisite artist and award winning turntablist, Shiftee. The mathematical musician mixes and makes a Grimey style of bass music and will be a surprise crowd-pleaser for the bewildered. This party is at the perfect spot for the occasional massive dance party. The Ukrainian Center is a beautiful aging edifice with surprising twists and turns and open spaces dotted with traditional iconography. This setting makes for a trippy atmosphere. Previous parties there in the past two years have been very enjoyable.

When when you get some popular names in and learn from peoples past experiences with how to light and resonate the various spaces in the building, you’re completing the recipe for a barn-burner party. Many regional DJs, producers, and bands, yes there is a live band, will spit-up and sound out in each one of the featured rooms. Check out the Facebook event page for the full line-up and schedule details. There will be food and libations available of purchase and also some crazy features including a bounce house and a ball pit! The lights and lasers are going to pre pretty dope as well, and as always most exciting will be the deep pure sound from Tristan’s bassbins and SevenOneSixSound’s setups.

The Drum Machine Report

Like the air temperature this winter, the climate of collective consciousness is constantly fluctuating in Buffalo. Us positivists are constantly shielding a barrage of bitterness and negativity grown out of many years of hardship and loss. Alas, we are the weight to balance these ideas, the youthful minds who will soon take over this city and lift it forward into the future! The work of change is never-ending, and only willing will rise up.

With the new year comes new happenings. It is a blessing to have some fresh things going on with a couple of new events happening this Friday. The Drum Machine Report focuses on what events and parties are going on that feature all styles of dance music every weekend in the Queen City. Check out what's happening now:

NEKTAR
451 Elmwood Ave. Buffalo, NY
The Guestbook Party is a fresh party for designed for Buffalonians who love EDM to experience something cutting-edge. The idea is to trend away from the misconstrued ideas of what dance music is currently on Chippewa. Lets face it, Buffalo nightclubs are trashy and stupid by comparison to those in big cities. But we as patrons of these venues, and aficionados of dancefloors are not oblivious to what's new and hot. DJ DSTAR and Promoter Sean Coughlin are wanting to bring a small taste of that big-city flavor to the upstate. DSTAR who is one half of the buzzworthy Solidisco is going to be playing mostly Deep House and NuDisco. Nektar is not the first place you think of for a party, but it should be interesting to see what kind of crowd is drawn in. Check out some of the Solidisco music below through their Soundcloud and hear why they are quickly gaining more attention on the national level.

Another new event happening on Friday is a monthly starting at Duke's called the Senior Discount Buffet. They're going along with the theme that these DJs are going to serve up a buffet of different EDM music for your pleasure. Featuring the styles of House, Techno, Bass, Electro, DnB, and Bass music. This night is also going to feature many new DJs that I haven't ever heard of. So it will be interesting to check this out in the coming months. New music below is from EYES EVERYWHERE, the boys formerly known as hxly.

Perhaps the best is yet to come. 2013 will be hard pressed to top last year in the number of great shows and events happening in Buffalo.  There is a bleak outlook for what has been announced. Many spring tours that were announced already left Buffalo out of the loop. We'll see. Things seem to work out. Buffalo will continue to trend upward both musically and artistically.

This weekend getting down on the dance floor will not be difficult. Check out these two cool events going on Friday night.

It may be a new year, but there's more of the same great stuff coming from Culture. Happening on the First Friday of every month, Culture is a party that combines the appreciation of visual art along with the entertainment of music! This week will feature the art of 464 Gallery artists, Marcus Wise and Ryan Mis. Also this is the first weekend that the show Culture will be a stop on the Greater Allentown First Fridays Gallery Walk. This installment of Culture will have music played by BFLO LYDIA, THE OWSKI, and TRAKBENDERS. All of whom will be playing on all vinyl!!! So if you'd rather be all in for some house music come and check out culture.

It helps a little that these two parties are directly across the street from each other. If you like a little flavor from both, it will be easy to hop from joint to joint. Much love.

The Drum Machine Report

The music never stopped. It never will. No matter what humanity will face, music is an essential part of our being. People will carry on their musical traditions into the next age, regardless of medium. Without computers and xlr cable, dance lovers will have to get down with jaw-harps and jug bands, but as long as there is electricity we will continue to light up the night with flashy melodies and big time basslines. Let whatever future hold on to the heart driving rhythms of composed electronic music.

Music in 2012 returned to a raw emotional state. Lyrically and musically this year has been about making less, more. Personally I am enamoured with "best-of" lists because it makes one appreciate that quintessentially, music is about diversity, and to experience everyone's diverse opinions and ratings is fascinating!

This weekend in Buffalo there are several danceparties going on that are worth checking out:

While the pragmatists are busy debunking the Mayan prophecy and rumors of the world ending in 15 days, NASA rover Curiosity is busy discovering organic molecules on Mars and controverting their findings as proof of life. My world already ended several months ago when the NHL and NHLPA decided to strangle the life out of fans of Ice Hockey. At the very least NASA could tell us about what they're really finding in those canyons-a Martian nightclub! No way!

Alas the world will not end on that fated approaching day, but that's not to say the world-as-we-know-it won't.

In the mean time we can anticipate and enjoy what's to come with what is really important in life, music!

Check out the Soundcloud widget from the RAM Records page to stream the tracks below. An advantage to all, the party tomorrow will have two rooms and feature many local and regional DJs. Well there wasn't going on much this weekend in the way of Dance and Electronic music events, but check out below what's going on now...

thursday 9/6
9p-4a
$10/21+ $12/18+
BROADWAY JOE'S
3051 main st. Buffalo, NY
This weekend was looking pretty blasé until the announcement of APHRODITE playing tonight at Broadway Joe's. This is a pretty big announcement with such little notice in my opinion, but sometimes it just happens that way. I just saw this world-class DJ/Producers name come up when I was reading about peoples experiences at this year's burning man! Amidst playing the biggest Electronic festivals in the world and Burning Man, the world's Mecca of art festivals, he'll stop by good old B-Joe's tonight thanks to Buffalo DnB and Boat Productions. Bass heads come out of the wood-work tonight to hear everything from classic Jungle to new-style Jump-Up. Also performing will be the immensely talented  DJ FLEX from Rochester with MC SCATTER, and DJs PERCEPTOR, ALPHA FLIGHT KREW, KILLSOUND, BERETTA, and MCs BRAKA D and THE CHIEF. Check out the mix below, which I really dug upon hearing it a few months ago, and also "Ganja Man" one of his more famous recent productions. I also wanted to share a laugh with you and all bass heads, just take a look at the most popular press photos for Aphrodite and Roni Size. LOL What is it with the sunglasses?

Also going on this weekend that isn't necessarily for TDMR, but that I would recommend is CITY OF NIGHT on Saturday at Silo City. Signature Buffalo mixed media event featuring incredible Art Installations by really talented individuals in a unique location that is ingrained in our City's collective history! Pun intended.

For a night-cap on Saturday, you may want to hit up Duke's Bohemian Grove Bar at 253 allen st. where Greg Howze, the artist formerly known as Twist will be spinning along with the Night-Owls DJs that appear there every Saturday. Much Love.
