Valentine's Day weekend is shaping up to be a great weekend for live local music. Why not kick it off early with another installment of Punk 'N' Tots over at Broadway Joe's? If you've never been, it's exactly what it sounds like: punk bands playing music, complimentary tater tots. This week, we have Boston punks Draize, local hardcore outfit Resist Control, and the relatively-new-but-totally-awesome Hot Tip. "All Bats Have Eyes and Can See," unfortunately, is not a band name, just a handy bit of trivia printed on the flyer that you can use to impress your friends. Click the links to check out Draize and Resist Control. Hot Tip is either too new or too cool to have recordings on the internet, but I saw them at a previous Punk N' Tots show and they killed it. Female-fronted, very raw, very aggressive. Definitely worth catching live. Kick off your Valentine's Day weekend early this Thursday. At the very least, you can stand next to other bodies, pretend you aren't alone, and dance off the desperation. The show kicks off at 9 pm at Broadway Joe's at 3051 Main Street. In the wake of the apocalypse of another Buffalo venue (sorry Waiting Room), we're left with just a few stalwarts. Okay, I'm exaggerating a little (the Waiting Room will be back after this weekend), but that's fine... It makes our choice easier when deciding what to do tonight. Failures' Union will be playing their glorious blend of late-90s alt-rock in an intimate set at Broadway Joe's. Supporting FU is the fantastic Tin Armor from Ohio and the dark indie-punk of Real People. The show is $6 and it starts at 6:30.
It's Tuesday, so you don't need me to tell you about all of the debaucherous shenanigans you can get into at Broadway Joe's starting at 10pm ($5). You're probably in line already, braving the harsh elements and quizzical glances from dangerous Main Street pedestrians all in the name of furious counterculture punk music.
Helping you bring down the establishment this evening will be a couple of Lansing, Michigan bands you've probably heard while drunk, The Plurals and The Hunky Newcomers. They'll be joined by our sweet sweet Buffalo boys (and girls) Mallwalkers and Del Paxton. You will all journey into a hovel of bloodthirsty, iniquitous, leather jacket enthusiasts together.
Six dollar pitchers and free tots to stuff your frigging face with should make this a night to remember, but you won't, because the pitchers are only six dollars. Have fun puking in the subway terminal kids.
Keeping Punk N' Tots alive is up to you, punkerrrzz. Come out to enjoy another PNT event TONIGHT at Broadway Joe's. On the bill is San Diego street punk band Some Kind of Nightmare, and Buffalo-native bands Jump the Blinds, On the Cinder, and Beardmosis.
The event stays nice and cheap for them dirty street kids (clean ones are acceptable as well), with entrance priced at $5 - the least you could pay to thank touring Some Kind of Nightmare for coming out. Beer pitchers are $6 and, of course, FREE FUCKIN' TOTS!
Make sure you bring your ID, as the event is 18 and up. Find a sitter for the kiddies and plan to get shitty.
This one's a win-win folks. Whether you're in the mood for some delicious tater tots or some delicious punk offerings, DJs Handsome Dan and Johnny Drama have you covered. They'll be spinning stuff from every genre imaginable while you enjoy the free basket of tots that comes with any drink. Not to mention, midnight marks Handsome Dan's 29th birthday - let's celebrate in style. Broadway Joe's is hosting tonight. Admission is free for anyone 21+, otherwise, $2 gets you in. Records start spinning at 10:00pm.
Don't know who made this joyful flyer for Pleasure Leftists, the expressive Cleveland transcendental post-punk quartet playing at Broadway Joe's tonight, but it really strikes a chord. Joining them, Utah Jazz, Cold Comfort, and Big Suze! Punk N' Tots, a weekly "punk rock theme night brought to you by the fine people at Spiral Scratch Records," is excited to show off this awesome out-of-town group, and is getting lots of support by local garage-punk, girl-guy, screaming-fun types, too. It's five dollars (entry and a free basket of tots) and the party starts at 10ish. See you there!

Shamrock Shakedown was one of the parties last year at Dnipro that got people more familiar with that space as a party spot. This year the party features CJ MILLI who is one of the top female DJ/Producers in the country. There's also a bunch of DJs and tandem artists on this bill that I have never heard of before, but am quite intrigued about seeing. There's four rooms and massive sound promoted, so if you're looking to party on Saturday night, this is where it will be.
Also going on this weekend is EXCISION performing live at Rapids Theater in Niagara Falls on Friday night. Excision, being as popular as he is actually has a strong following in this region. Every show he's played here has been well attended.
Pollock is a name that resonates in Buffalo's underground hard rock and metal communities. The five piece ensemble have been playing together in one form or another for several years now, honing their craft and developing a sound that blends a somber, melodic approach with pure, brute, and heavy weight. The music is thoughtful and carefully crafted, a testament to the hard work the group has put in over the years, and a reflection of how they've matured since their inception. If you're a fan of Tool, Stabbing Westward or Vast chances are, you'll love Pollock.
Tonight marks the celebration of their new CD, The Moonlight Show, available for $12, along with several of Buffalo's other elite metal groups including the awesomely heavy Herod, Aspired Infliction, Super Killer Robots and Dangerous Green. Pollock will also have other merchandise available for sale. Broadway Joes is the place. 9pm is the time and $7 is the price. Get there early and stay late. Tonight promises to be one of the best showcases for heavy bands in some time.

While the pragmatists are busy debunking the Mayan prophecy and rumors of the world ending in 15 days, NASA rover Curiosity is busy discovering organic molecules on Mars and controverting their findings as proof of life. My world already ended several months ago when the NHL and NHLPA decided to strangle the life out of fans of Ice Hockey. At the very least NASA could tell us about what they're really finding in those canyons-a Martian nightclub! No way!
Alas the world will not end on that fated approaching day, but that's not to say the world-as-we-know-it won't.

A very special treat will be taking place this evening at Broadway Joe's. Igloo music presents: Technocracy. Headlining this dark beat event will be none other than Buffalo's own, Mike Parker.
Parker both an educator in the visual arts, in which he lectures fine art at the University at Buffalo, makes delicious beats for your listening pleasure. He has years of fine tuning his craft and countless EP's (18 to be exact), including an album and a compilation disc with electronic avant-pop artist, Matthew Dear. Releasing his efforts on both his own label, Geophone, and popular German label, Prologue, Mike Parker has become an artistic specimen. Parker, has played gigs all over the world including a recent mini tour hitting the likes of Berlin, Budapest and London.
People attending tonights gig should expect some hard hitting techno/house accompanied by dark and extra deep beats. Also on the bill are Buffalo favorites:
Also going on this weekend that isn't necessarily for TDMR, but that I would recommend is CITY OF NIGHT on Saturday at Silo City. Signature Buffalo mixed media event featuring incredible Art Installations by really talented individuals in a unique location that is ingrained in our City's collective history! Pun intended.
For a night-cap on Saturday, you may want to hit up Duke's Bohemian Grove Bar at 253 allen st. where Greg Howze, the artist formerly known as Twist will be spinning along with the Night-Owls DJs that appear there every Saturday. Much Love.

NOAH D is a truly innovative Dubstep and Drum n Bass Producer/DJ. If you don't want to take my word for it, just listen to his latest album released on SMOG Records entitled Perspective. Check out the second track off of the album "Just Right" featuring The Grouch below as well as SMOG records podcast featuring Noah D. The album is a fresh interpretation of heavy hypnotic rhythms influenced by all forms of Bass Music. The party will be happening both inside on the stage, which has a new sound-system, and additionally outside on the back patio. This is to provide your face with multiple ways to melt. Other acts on the night include BIG BASHA, DEMI GOD aka JAH MC, THE VERDICT, E-MISSION & TEMPERS ROUGE, LACQUA, POTENT J, DA BUTCHA, NECKBRACE, and RUFUS GIBSON. When chatting with Basha, he let me know that Noah D's been trying to make Buffalo a stop and it hasn't worked out until now. Get ready for some pent up energy to be released.

Boasting itself as Buffalo's biggest 4/20 party, The Great American Smokeout will take place tomorrow at Broadway Joe's beginning at 4pm in the afternoon. The event will be an all-day affair featuring the talents of many local bands. The most notables of the big lineup are local hip-hop fusion group Type Relevant, and indie funk jamband Whiskey Reverb. Big Basha is the only DJ on the bill, scheduled to close-off the long night. There will be food -and- BBQ (hence the "smokeout" monicker), even the fire spinning troupe Funkafire (likely in the backyard). Still not quite sure why bars throw parties for 4/20; not like you'd be allowed to medicate inside. It's more about meeting up with friends, checking out some local stoner rock, and enjoying some munchies and beers. Check out the sounds of Whiskey Reverb below. Long live the light of Buffalo. Here we come out of the doldrums of the Winter months and fast too! Everything is happening so quickly. Stop and take a moment to grasp how lucky we are in this pocket of the World. The simple joy that one gets when seeing live music is not something to take for granted.
Friday night will be nutso when JOE NICE returns along with CONSCIOUS PILOT to Broadway Joe’s. These two gents are astute in the original styles of Dubstep music, which is uncommon in American Dubstep DJs and producers. Joe Nice is a veteran of the NYC Dub War and recently the Reconstrvct parties in Brooklyn. He is arguably one of the choicest American dubstep selectors! CP is the effing man. I first saw him open for Borgore and was thoroughly impressed. Basha has usually got the tip on his originals so you may already be privy to his sounds. Drop D and Stuntman will open for Joe Nice, then Conscious Pilot and Basha will close out the night.
Saturday will be a night for the lovers of wisdom as well. Conspirator will be at the Ballroom and a crowd of many will welcome them with open arms. And although I will not be in attendance, (Its ok, I’ve seen them a million times) I will be at the official after party. The Official After Party is of course the Queen City Cartel’s FRICTION party at DBGB’s and in association with MNM presents, will feature Conspirator's opener, producer ELIOT LIPP performing a live DJ set! This is super cool. Not that FRICTION needs and extra boost, but the addition of Lipp will certainly inject more hot love into the party. Lipp’s music is often perceived as pretty chill, but he’ll bring some sexy funky stuff to his DJ set. Also on the night will be Bear Skin Rug, my mans-n-them Mario Bee, and Perceptor to close (maybe on that late-night future bass ting).
