So what exactly is the Queen City Music Lottery? Rather than attempt to explain it myself, I'm going to steal from the facebook page.

In a nutshell, the Queen City Music Lottery is a showcase of "new" Buffalo area bands formed entirely at random! These "new" bands must complete a few simple but super important tasks to remain eligible to perform in a final Queen City Music Lottery Show case!

How does it work?
To participate you must come to one of the TWO SIGN UP meetings being held. At the meeting all names of the willing participants will be DRAWN at RANDOM and you will be formed into a BAND!

IMPORTANT-Bands ARE NOT chosen based on participants musical "skill" or what instruments they might play. ALL BANDS ARE FORMED AT RANDOM. For example: this means that any given band could consist of multiple members that primarily play guitar or maybe your band consists of people that normally play drums, or maybe no one in your band actual knows how to play anything and you are all complete strangers!!! The point is to met new people, play new instruments, and DO SOMETHING NEW AND FUN!

EVERYONE and ANYONE is welcome to participate!

SOME INFO TO HELP AVOID CONFUSION:

The reason I did TWO MEETINGS:

REASON #1: I WAS BASICALLY OUT OF TOWN FOR 3 1/2 WEEKS AND DIDN'T GET THE PROMO ON THIS STARTED AS EARLY AS I WOULD HAVE LIKED.

REASON #2:I want to give as many people as possible a chance to participate in the project.

Here is rough idea of what will happen at each meeting: The rules of the project will be discussed. Then the names of willing participants will be collected. Based on the number of participants at each meeting, a number of bands will be created (no more than 5 people per band). We will take a little time out at the meeting, names will be collected, bands will be formed, and then the final announcement will be made at the meeting. This will be the same process at EACH MEETING, so you ONLY NEED to go to ONE MEETING and depending who attends each meeting, that is basically the pool from which the bands will be formed.

Attending both meets DOES NOT get you into two bands. Only one band per person.

Again, bands are formed basically at random and NOT based on what instrument you currently play.

There will be a few simple but important requirements that must be met to "complete" the project. Those "bands" that do not meet these specific deadlines for the requirements will be removed from the project and will not be allowed to participate in the final showcase gig.

What are the requirements? Come to a meeting and find out!

And now, heres some music that's totally unrelated to anything.

Trying to start a band but don't know any other musicians? Or maybe you are sick of your current band mates and want a fresh start? Well, Sugar City & Peterwalkee Records have you covered. Behold, the first ever Queen City Music Lottery, giving musicians a chance to throw their name in the ring and form a completely new and original band. Musicians of all skill set are encouraged to sign up and be flexible as band mates are not chosen by instrument, meaning bands may have multiple drums sets, or all keyboards, etc. You get the idea.

Without a doubt, Spiral Scratch (291 Bryant St.) is hosting the best show of 2014 (thus far) tonight in their tiny backroom/basement hybrid concert hall. On the bill is Zealot, a Japandroids-y three piece who sprung onto the scene late last fall and were dubbed one of our top five Buffalo bands to watch in 2014. Also featured on said list is Alex Berkley, who will be returning with a full band backing, the Atlanta Falcons, for the first time in about five years. Not to be forgotten are indie rockers Returners, making their first "returning" gig in 2014. Lastly are late 90's rock revivalists Wooden Waves, who will be playing some tracks from their upcoming album titled, Wilder Dreams, set to be released sometime in late winter/early spring. Get there early because that place fills up quickly and gets uncomfortable if you have to watch from the stairs. Doors are at 6pm with a suggested donation type situation. I would suggest $5-$7. 

 
 

Let's face it, America is totally jumping the shark with this whole Black Friday thing. It's gotten entirely out of hand so badly that Thanksgiving has become meaningless for far too many Americans, for both the bargain hungry consumer and the poor souls who have to serve them instead of being with their families. It really is disgusting. There is however a wonderful silver lining to the blight of Black Friday, and that's the Record Store Day sequel that lands yet more goodness in our local independent record shops for our joyful consumption. 

Once again a tremendous bevy of artists are offering special artifacts and goodies for sale only at record stores to support these vital music outlets and the communities of music fans they serve. It's capitalist consumerism you can feel good about, and frankly if you value the physical article that is vinyl (and to a less extent CD) it's another smorgasborg of music fan enjoyment. What better way to cap off this beautiful fall day in Buffalo than to pack yourself into a small basement for a nice and early show. Tonight at Spiral Scratch Records, Masters of the Obvious, or M.O.T.O., will be back in town after making a similar stop over the summer. The long time (30 years and going) blistering punk act, who got their start in New Orleans, before lead singer and soul founding member Paul Caporino settled in New Hampshire, will be joined by Gumwads and Butchers. Tonight's show starts at the pleasantly early time of 6:15. Bring some cash to support the touring acts and buy a record.

While I am a relative new comer when it comes to buying vinyl, my Buffalo store of choice has always been Spiral Scratch Records, located right off Elmwood Ave on 291 Bryant St. Being a convenient block away from two of my apartments over the last couple years, I have made frequent stops to catch one of their always fun basement shows (site of my first Space Wolves encounter), spent hours picking through their solid selection of both local and national records, and getting in line early to grab a super exclusive Record Store Day release.

The store also has the wonderful distinction of being the location of my very first vinyl buy (Sufjan Steven's Illinois) and of one of my most awkward moments in some time. Anyways, that little shop that could, which after being pretty much lost to a fire a few years back at it's original Delaware Ave location, is chugging along, and this afternoon, will be celebrating its music filled 5th anniversary beginning at noon. The day will include performances from the Fleshy Mounds, Like A Panther, The Afterbirth Tycoon, and others.

So before things get crazy tonight with nearly every Halloween party in the city going down, stop over for an afternoon of music and record buying, and while you are there, say hi to Dave and his crew. They are keeping a dying breed of shops alive (Buffalo itself barely has a half dozen still operating), and deserve a little dap for their efforts. Bring along some extra cash for some baked goods, and if you have some kitty litter lying around, feel free to donate as all proceeds will be going towards The West Side Pussy Cat Project. Helping cats and buying vinyl is a pretty solid day if you ask me.

M.O.T.O. - short for Masters Of The Obvious - have been together for over 30 years. The band was founded by frontman Paul Caporino in New Orleans in 1981. Caporino has been the only consistent member of the band over the years, but their blistering brand of garage punk continues to thrill audiences everywhere.

Tonight, the band heads to Buffalo for the first time in seven years, when they take the stage at Spiral Scratch Records on Bryant Street in Buffalo with opening act Red Delicious. If you want to see a survivor of the punk circuit that only makes it to Buffalo every so often, you'd be wise to check out the scene at Spiral Scratch tonight. Tickets are free, but donations are being accepted.

Super Bowl Sunday is a totally lame quasi national holiday, ruined utterly by the big corporations who couldn't help but ruin it once they realized that it was a quasi national holiday. Big commerce does that. Tomorrow's Record Store Day, however, is a wonderful quasi national holiday: the corporations haven't ruined it, it's for a good cause (preserving and strengthening the endangered species that is your local record store), and it's totally by and for music lovers. Even though money changes hands, Record Store Day, now in it's sixth year, feels pure, beneficent, and good for the soul.

There's a palpable feeling of joy and bonhomie at the record store on Record Store Day because there's no substitute for laying your hands on that vinyl 7' or LP that you read about as part of your pregame research. Perhaps this celebration of the physical article is why Record Store Day has taken off and grown with each successive installment in this age of digital ephemera. Spiral Scratch never really fails to disappoint - this time around, they're bringing the delightfully Archers of Loaf-y Witchfeet.  Think driving basslines, gritty vocals, and a pop-sensibility that definitely exists even if you can't quite put your finger on it.  The Afterbirth Tycoon and The Word Girls will be opening up the show for what promises to be a fun Saturday night at Spiral Scratch headquarters.

Music lovers of Western New York, I hope your Record Store Day was fulfilling and fun, and that you got most of what you wanted because indeed this year was the best RSD yet. The wait is almost over as tomorrow is the 5th annual edition of Record Store Day, an international celebration of local record stores. Both of Buffalo's record stores are participating (we used to have more, but, that's why we now have Record Store Day) with Record Theatre (both locations) and Spiral Scratch Records featuring a veritable bonanza of special RSD releases covering an astounding variety of musical genres. Here's our guide to the Record Store Day releases that we're looking forward to:


Afrika Bambaataa/ MC5, Kick Out The Jams, 7" single. Not a mash-up (although that might have been cool), this single features the MC5 classic and the Afrika Bambaataa classic cover.


Animal Collective, Transverse Temporal Gyrus, LP. In 2010, Animal Collective and visual artist Danny Perez put on an audio/visual installation at the Guggenheim Museum, and this LP will be the only physical release featuring music from that installation. A must for Animal Collective fans.








Otis Redding/Aretha Franklin, Respect, 7" single. Features the Otis Redding original and the Aretha cover that you know and love.














Beach House, Lazuli b/w Equal Mind, 7" single. A lovely appetizer for the main course that will be the new Beach House album due May 15.




Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals Live From The Legendary Sun Studios, LP. Grace Potter and Co have become bona fide Buffalo favorites, and this live set recorded at the same Sun Studios where Elvis recorded his earliest (and finest) work will be a hot ticket.






Iggy and The Stooges, Live at All Tomorrow's Parties, LP. Live cuts hand selected by Iggy and The Stooges, plus an interview with Iggy Pop.














Sigur Ros, Hvarf-Heim, 2x LP. This special RSD vinyl release features electric and acoustic performances featured in the excellent Sigur Ros concert film Heima. Previously available only on boring cd.












The Flaming Lips, The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends, 2x LP. Featuring collaborations with Neon Indian, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, Nick Cave, Bon Iver, Yoko Ono, Chris Martin, and Ke$ha previously available on handmade vinyl records hand delivered by Wayne Coyne to record stores in the Oklahoma City area and USB chips embedded in gummy skulls, gummy fetuses, and even gold dipped human skulls, this might well be the ultimate Record Store Day release.




The Black Angels, Lonely b/w Watch Out Boy, 7" single. Features new music from these magnificent psychedelic rockers from Austin Texas (who play The Town Ballroom August 4th!) and a free download of The Zombies classic "She's Not There."


Uncle Tupelo, 7" Singles Box Set. Before Wilco there was Uncle Tupelo, and this box set collects that seminal band's singles.




Arcade Fire, Sprawl II, LP. There's not a lot of info on this release. It's listed as an LP and not a 7" single so one would suspect that it's more than just a single. Arcade Fire fans will probably just pick it up on general principle.










Bruce Springsteen, Rocky Ground b/w The Promise, 7" Single. An excellent way souvenir for fans of The Boss.  Fans still buzzing about the show last week. 














M83, Mirror, 7" Single. Features an unreleased track off of Hurry Up, We're Dreaming on one side, and a cool engraving on the other.














The Breakfast Club and Pretty In Pink soundtracks, LP. Ideal for 80's fetishists, John Hughes fans, Molly Ringwald devotees, and anybody who wants to truly appreciate M83's Saturdays=Youth.

Remember when you heard that back in the day Buffalo's own Rick James was in a band with Neil Young, and you said "get the ____ outta here" or "no ____ing way?"
