Tonight in fantastic bargains: 101010, Returners and A Relative Term will be playing at Nietzsche's for five dollars at the door. If you aren't familiar with the bands, I suppose they could all safely be categorized as indie rock, but there's much more going on. Returners bring the rock, A Relative Term tend more toward the epic and the atmospheric, and 101010 might fall in between, with hooky, melodic songs with lush, textured instrumentation.

It has been nice to see Buffalo Iron Works starting to book some solid touring bands and quality local showcases as of late. The freshman venue had been running the risk of being a covers bands type place, especially on event nights over at the arena, so some good, original music will go a long way in getting people downtown. Along with the just announced Cloud Nothings show for April, tonight's bill of Wooden Waves, Returners, and Bill Nehill is another step in the right direction for the young bar. After a great showcase appearance in Spiral Scratch basement a few weeks back, which also featured Returners (and Nehill too, he does work there), Wooden Waves look to have a solid 2014 ahead, especially with the much waited LP dropping later this spring. You can catch all of these long time Mohawk acts tonight starting at 7:00pm, with a $5 cover.
Without a doubt, Spiral Scratch (291 Bryant St.) is hosting the best show of 2014 (thus far) tonight in their tiny backroom/basement hybrid concert hall. On the bill is Zealot, a Japandroids-y three piece who sprung onto the scene late last fall and were dubbed one of our top five Buffalo bands to watch in 2014. Also featured on said list is Alex Berkley, who will be returning with a full band backing, the Atlanta Falcons, for the first time in about five years. Not to be forgotten are indie rockers Returners, making their first "returning" gig in 2014. Lastly are late 90's rock revivalists Wooden Waves, who will be playing some tracks from their upcoming album titled, Wilder Dreams, set to be released sometime in late winter/early spring. Get there early because that place fills up quickly and gets uncomfortable if you have to watch from the stairs. Doors are at 6pm with a suggested donation type situation. I would suggest $5-$7.
All good things must come to an end. And Mohawk Place was one of the good things for sure.
By now, you know the story. There’s no point repeating it. We at buffaBLOG and other news sources (see Donny’s piece in Artvoice and Jeff Miers Gusto write-up) have written fantastic obituaries and have done our best to document the life, legacy and demise of our proud venue. All that’s left now is to celebrate.
Tonight sparks night one of Mohawk Place’s Last Waltz (7pm doors). It’s sold out and if you didn’t get tickets, I feel sorry for you. It’s surely going to be one of those “talked about nights” for years to come.
Here are the bands listed in the order they’re going to play: White Whale, Trailer Park Tornadoes, TMMC, Returners, Bensin, Chosen Ones, Wolf Tickets, Bobo, Irving Klaws. Each of these artists have put their own unique imprint on the stage at Mohawk and you probably recognize most of the names so I don‘t think introductions are necessary. Show starts are 7:30 so get there earlier enough to see White Whale and stay til the very end.

The Jealous Sound are pure 90's. And I mean that in the best way possible. Back when indie rock meant Fugazi and Emo meant Sunny Day Real Estate, the Jealous Sound were beginning to construct the blueprint for their music. Already steeped in the rock tradition and featuring ex- members of Sunday's Best, Knapsack, and Jawbox, the group developed their sound; a potent mix of alternative, and the pre-cursor to what we know today as "emo". The good kind of emo. Not the bad.
The band is currently on tour and tonight we see them venture to Mohawk Place along with Daytrader, their tour-mates and buddies. Also on the bill are two of Buffalo's most popular "alternative" bands, the Failure's Union and Returners. If you've been missing good rock'n'roll these days, this show is a good place to start. Now, if you'll excuse me...I'm going to listen to some Gin Blossoms.
Kick off your weekend a day early and make your way on down to Mohawk Place tonight for the three-headed rock n' roll beast that is Pile, Returners, and The Fucking Hotlights.
Buffalo is to be the most recent stop on Pile's (mostly) nationwide tour which started in their hometown of Boston and goes as far (south)west as Texas before making their way back East across I-10 and making stops along the western side of Great Smoky Mountains on their way home.
Playing in support are both Returners and The Fucking Hotlights who are always guaranteed to put on an energetic performance.
"Prom Song" off Pile's forthcoming album, Dripping, has a frantic and pulsing sound complemented by the squeals of a Whammy-esque driven guitar at the end.

Sugar City, while still looking for a permanent home, has been quite active this summer. Today, stop by the Adam Mickiewicz Library for a free record fair and show. With over 12 vendors and many more bringing a crate or two to sell, there are sure to be a lot of great records available.
The fair is free and features performances by Returners, Resist, Control, Ratzinger.

Returners, a new Buffalo band, just recently released their demo and I think it warrants a "check out". Towing the line between Sonic Youth-esque post punk, Gin Blossoms melodies, and a late 80's/early 90's melancholic feel, these are well-crafted songs, perfectly recorded. But what should you expect? It was recorded at Hi-Lo Studios, the very studio that brought you Chylde's epic album along with many of the Harvest Sum greats. Demo tapes will soon be at Spiral Scratch. In the meantime, you can download the album at their bandcamp page. Do yourself a favor and check em out.
Pissed off, mean punk rock, coming from the best in Buffalo, Plates. For those who haven't heard them or caught any of their insane shows, Plates are absolute beasts, fronted by madman Teo. Describing their sound is difficult. Punk rock, yes. Certainly in attitude and delivery. However, they have a much more noisy, bass-heavy chaotic sound. As unpredictable as it is savage. Tonight, the boys are playing Mohawk Place with Ida Sessions, Returners as well as Rochester's King Vitamin. It's a front stage show which means twice the insanity (punk rock should be played on a smaller stage, don't you think?) and the action gets under way around 6:30pm.
