Mercedes-Benz of Buffalo Fashion Week begins

The annual Mercedes-Benz Buffalo Fashion Week came to existence over three years ago, and after months upon months of preparation and long awaited anticipation, the 2012 show begins today. If you have attended the Buffalo State College's Runway or the well-esteemed Mass Appeal fashion show, you've experienced the exhilaration of inspirational innovation. Whether you stood in the back, sat in the press box, or meandered the VIP room, you've experienced that rush when women and men travel the runway paced by the music that mirrors the designs. The Queen City uses it's thriving culture in fashion and the arts to display such, in the most effervescent way.

There are six scheduled events occurring this week. Ticket prices range from free to pricey, and a couple events fall right in between. I'll be doing coverage at most of the events so check back for reviews and a slideshow of photos.

The show kicks off today with a high fashion photo shoot in Niagara Square which ends at 2:30 pm and the main runway event at the breathtaking Statler Towers is next Thursday. The schedule for events is below or can be found on their website.

The Drum Machine Report

In and out of Buffalo like she's the main B. Everybody's try to get out and hit the road for that Summer rush. Camp Bisco is this weekend, and NYC is a hotbed every weekend from here until Labor Day. So if the Queen City's got you clogged up, it may be time to cleanse out on the road for a few days. But for those who are staying put and wanna party there's a lot going on. The Harbor shows this weekend are huge attractions, and for those who wanna hit the late-night paths of this fair City this is where it's at.

This night will feature the musical stylings of DJ JIGGZ, ANGELO PETRUCCI, MEDISON, and SWAGGLEROCK. Weather's looking good, so hopefully that upstairs outdoor patio will be open for enjoyment.

Tonight: Laidback Luke

When I hear the name Laidback Luke, a vivid memory comes to mind: a summer night spent in the sticky underground of Soundlab.  His remix of "Out of the Blue" was a consistently played track on my iPod and could often be heard blasting from my dorm room window weaving around the religious statues and unpleasantly fragrant trees of the Canisius quad.  But this moment was particularly special: I stepped out of the dingy bathroom and as if I walked through a vortex into the enveloping sounds of progressive-house, I entered a new world.  The room was lit with light blue and I'll never forget the feeling of that ecstatic contentment when the local DJs on stage played this song out.

Philippine born and Holland raised Luke Van Scheppingen, known to the world as Laidback Luke, overtime has become one of the most highly regarded names in the DJ world.  His productions, predominantly house, and performances across the world has built him a fan base of hundreds of thousands.  Performances this year include the Electric Daisy Carnival, Electric Zoo, Tomorrowland and Ultra.  In 2010 not only did he place #17 on DJ Mag's Top 100 DJ list, he also won the International Dance Music Award for "Leave the World Behind."

In 2004 he developed his own label, Mixmash Records with a mission to be "adament in it's pursuit for good music."  Names on the roster include Steve Aoki, Wynter Gordon, A-Trak, Angger Dimas, Avicii and Oliver Twizt.  Buffalo's very own DJ Dstar was recently signed to the label as well.

During an interview at DJ Mag's Top 100 DJ list release in 2010, the interviewer asked Laidback Luke about whether his success has inflated his ego. "Maybe this keeps me grounded as well, I just want to have a really good fucking party, together with the crowd.  It's not about me.  Like, yes I do bring the music but we should just have a great time..." he said.

The show is tonight June 14.
10 pm - 4 am
at Lux Nightclub (75 W. Chippewa)
$20 - 18+

Factory Nightlife has also put some wonderful local talent on the bill.  DJ Dstar and McNasty will be opening for Laidback Luke on the main stage while Mario Bee, Miosi and SwaggleRock are on the patio.

Check out the event Facebook page for more information.

The Drum Machine Report

Well the cats out of the bag. Avicii at the First Niagara Center is canceled. Everyone is chiming in with their opinions; why it was wrong to begin with. The idea was flawed, yes. But the effort was there. Buffalo is not Miami. Enough people to “fill” an arena are not going to pay a ton of money up-front to see a guy push play on his own songs. We have a difficult enough task sometimes going out to support the local DJs. Alas, this fodder is inconsequential to Buffalo’s greater attraction to dance music. It quickly becomes an argument involving the ‘big market’ vs. ‘small market,’ which if you’re a fan of local sports, you know all too well.
In other news, Girl Talk got announced to play at a venue that doesn't exist, yet. The Outer Harbor, not to be confused with the Buffalo Place Rocks the Harbor concert series at the Erie Canal site. Remember where that cheesy yet cool outdoor slosh bar ‘The Pier’ was? Well, where it used to be? There's a flat slab of land right there jutting out into the water this side of the break wall that is the intended landing zone for some pretty large happenings, including Girl Talk and Drop Kick Murphys. Seems pretty ambitious to do shows of that magnitude in a space that has yet to be tested.
This weekend’s got some pretty cool stuff going on, so let’s get right into it.
